Hi Fellow Sailors. My name is Paul Baker, from Orange County, California. I have an M-15 "Chili Pepper", made in 1982. I would like to install a topping lift but there is no block aloft. Any suggestions on where and how to install on the aluminum mast ? This is a great forum....I have been reading it for some time now and have learned a lot about the Mongomerys. Thanks!
Paul, I added a topping lift to my 1982 M15. Mine is two-way, like an extra halyard. It has a bronze spring snap hook that attaches to the boom-end eye; then through a masthead block down to an existing mast cleat. The "masthead" block is a cheek block pop-riveted to the starboard side of the mast. Two points of interest: 1) I was able to use the topping lift as an emergency main halyard one time, having lost the original up the mast, proving the worth of the two-way system. 2) There were already several holes in the masthead where the PO had mounted fittings. Wanting to avoid those, I installed the block several inches down from the masthead. That means I have to make sure I'm on the starboard tack when raising the sail. Actually, it could be that a block on the side of the mast couldn't be mounted high enough to avoid this issue.
