My mast raising system is a home made version of the factory Macgregor system. The 2 x 4 “gin pole” (I think it has a different name in this application) stays stationary throughout the process. It acts more like a crane to lift the mast by a bale mounted about 6’ up. A fixed length line goes from the top of the pole to the bow cleat. There is no need to fasten the foot of the pole to the mast or step. Gravity and friction do the job nicely. In the picture I am using the jib sheets as stays for the pole but they are not necessary.
