Ha. Well, I certainly wouldn't recommend following me! Plus I have the impression you, Jerry, have a lot more knowledge of the area, especially from the perspective of being in a little sailboat, than any guidebook. A guidebook just gives me a chance to study a little on my own. I am definitely liking the idea of making this trip, with or without a group. The group sounds fun in a lot of ways though the complications and compromises always go up with more people. These things sort of go up with the square of the number of people. What is the best way to stay up to date on what you are planning? The Tucson event in Bahia San Carlos on the mainland side of the gulf is interesting but would be a really long drive for me starting from the middle of California. Bahia de Los Angeles on the Baja penninsula looks good to me on the basis of a Google Earth review and is a lot closer than San Carlos. Crossing the gulf from Bahia de Los Angeles to the Kino area sounds cool but the Kino area doesn't look as interesting from Google Earth. Driving to Kino also looks like a long way and not a very interesting way for me. The drive to Bahia de Los Angeles on the other hand looks doable and interesting. Where does one arrange to safely leave ones vehicle and trailer at Bahia de Los Angeles? What are the launching conditions like there? The islands nearer Bahia de Los Angeles seem to have more anchorages than those on the Kino / mainland side (of course I haven't been there in real life) and it seems like a very nice few days could be spent in the area of Bahia de Los Angeles. Tyler mentions March and October being the best times on the Sear of Cortez. March is a bit fast for me, June is doable but not inside of Tyler's windows, October would work well. I guess I better be getting with Elliot Patteson for a storm jib and a second reef in my mainsail. The only problem for cruising in October is the conflict with the Guaymas race which is usually on Columbus Day weekend, which is the 13th of Oct this year. The Bahia De Los Angeles area, with its many islands, is definately the best cruising compared with the San Carlos/Guaymas area (which means sailing N up the coast, called the "milk run" by the Tucson club, and the logistics of doing the cruise out of LA Bay then moving S to Guaymas for the race would be complicated, mostly because of having to move the launching vehicles/ trailers from Baja to Guaymas. So it seems to me that best would be to launch at Kino Bay, which is W of Hermosillo, then those wanting to do the race could either retrieve at Kino and then tow S to San Carlos or sail there. Maybe Bill Ahrens and others from Tucson could comment. Bill has done the race many times and also cruised that whole area extensively. jerry ----- Original Message ----- From: "Todd Bradley" <todd@btbuilders.net> To: "'David Grah'" <d_b_grah@yahoo.com>; "'For and about Montgomery Sailboats'" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Thursday, February 06, 2014 6:26 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Mexico I am really excited about this potential trip! David, I want to clarify that my experience is in october being ideal for camping along the Baja Sea of Cortez coast, but I don't know about offshore conditions during this time. Sincerely, Tyler '81 M15 #157 "Defiant" On Feb 6, 2014, at 9:37 AM, David Grah wrote:
