Sorry if this is off topic and I know this subject gets totally hashed but I am in the market for a 4 stroke outboard for my M15 and need to know the transom height or how to measure it. My boat is an 89 model with the fixed motor mount. I know that the Honda 2hp is all I need and is the bomb BUT, Stockdale Marine has a Briggs & Stratton 5hp for less $$ AND it has neutral, forward and reverse AND an external tank so I can cruise the river all day if no wind. Thanks to anyone who responds. All comments welcome. Ran Dawson Little Wing Folsom Lake California
Randy, I wish I had an external fuel tank again. Refueling can be a challenge when the going gets a little rough. That said, compare the weight of each engine. 5 HP suggests that will be a lot of iron hanging off your stern. Stan M-15, #177, Carol II
I found a one gallon tank that fits in the cockpit locker on my m15 and made a couple of modification to help, but not fix, all the problems with refueling the Honda 2 internal tank while on the water. I built a fuel line with a standard squeeeze-bulb pump;, drilled a hole in the spare fuel tank cap and stuck the hose through using a fuel resistant grommet. I think I found the grommet at an ACE hardware store. Anyway, this setup seems to work well - at least when I remember to fill the spare tank before I head out. Motors often follow the GASP rule and run out of gas only in the worst conditions. Don M15-248 Dream Catcher Stanley Winarski wrote:

Randy: The M15 has a limited hull speed. TheHonda 2hp is able to provide enough power without any problem, even against a 2.5 knot current on SF Bay. The added weight of a 5hp on the transom is too much for the M15 to carry, in my opinion. You can purchase a new 2hp Honda 4 stroke for $ 699.00 with a neutral. I recommend you try a 5hp and a 2hp on the M15 before you buy one. It's an important decision. MessageJust to let you know of a possible option, I bought a new Johnson 4 horse a year ago, & it has a switch allowing either internal or external fuel supply, this may be a feature other mfgs. are offering now. It works good, check if Honda or other mfgs. have this option if it appeals to you.
