I am ready to purchase a brand new outboard because I need peace of mind for going across the Catalina Channel. I have the old style motor mount that is not adjustable. I am asking for any advice about engines from anyone who is willing to share their experience and opinions so that I can make the wisest choice when I shop for an engine. Almost everyone is going to suggest the Honda 2.3 or the Suzuki 2.5, unless they think an electric is viable (I do not). I prefer the Zuke for its neutral gear and additional power, and the Honda for its air cooling. The Honda is louder and takes off on starting, jerking at mooring lines or making it stressful to pull the anchor, the Zuke is arguably a more refined motor for starting in neutral and allowing for a relaxed start to the day. There's also the Lehr 2.5 hp propane outboard. However they only make a short shaft (15") model still, it appears. So unless you installed a raise/lower adjustable motor mount that probably wouldn't work. Also they are about 8 lbs heavier than the gas Suzuki or Honda. Does have N-F gear like the Suzuki. There are some advantages with propane - easier starting, less mess/smell, external tank option even on the smallest motors. You can get an 11 lb composite/fiberglass external tank, and motor a looooong time without refueling. I have the Honda 2.3 for my M17. Use it very little, but quite happy with it so far when I have used it. Bought it because air-cooled so less maintenance and possible trouble points than the Suzuki. Also the Suzuki 2.5 (especially long shaft, they only made short shaft at first) was a fairly new product back when I bought, so I opted for the longer proven history of the Honda. I am fine with the centrifugal clutch on the Honda. It will start just fine at much lower throttle setting than the manual tells you to use. Will still give your boat a little push for the first few seconds. I've not had it be a problem. Gentler than the yanking on dock/mooring lines from a typical power boat wake. The Honda warranty is tops, in theory. And, be aware that actually getting factory warranty service is another matter, depending on where you live, what dealers are available, and where you got the motor vs. where you take it for service. If you have a friendly helpful local dealer with a good service reputation and you buy from them you'll probably be OK if you need warranty service. The other end of the spectrum might be if you buy it from an online discount retailer and then take it to your local unfriendly poor service reputation dealer for warranty service. My ‘new to me’ 15 came with a Suzuki 2.5 long, and an owner modified mount. I have used the Suzuki quite a bit and am very happy with it having been an Evinrude dealer for years back in the last century. (Still have a 4 Yachtwin) Water cooled is an asset in my view for efficiency and NOISE level! Water cooled exhaust is a bonus and quiet rates high on my list. Maintenance is minimal - none in 10 months of very frequent use, just don’t start them ‘dry’. The PO made an interesting and vibration reducing mount that accommodates the engine in the tilted position and dramatically cuts down on vibration. The Honda and Suzuki are both single cylinder engines, prone to vibration, the Suzuki runs MUCH smoother than any single cylinder Honda I have used in the past. Extended mount with truck tire sidewall ‘isolators’. Plan is to weld the aluminum brackets at the edges. Engine tilts regardless of powerhead rotation and gives very good clearance from waterline in tilt position. I can supply measurements and additional photos if interested. Interesting idea - let us know how it works out! I put neoprene washers between my motor mount and the transom when I re-mounted it after adding a backing plate inside the transom. Hard to say how much difference it makes. Maybe none, but seemed worth a try as it was simple enough to do. A significant component of the motor noise is generated by the vibration of the motor transmitting thru the hull - a big hollow fiberglass sounding board! So anything that damps some of that transfer of vibration might help. The sound coming directly from the power head itself is the other main component. I think I already posted a while back about the foam piece I cut to fill the notch in my M17 transom. My motor is on an adjustable transom mount, and the power head sits pretty much right behind the notch when deployed and running. Hi Gary, What you did with your motor mount is exactly what I was looking for! Could you send more pictures and dimensions? Do you think the dampeners made of tire sidewalls makes a significant difference in vibration and sound transmission? My only concern would be fatigue and loosing an engine. If you weld it at the corners, it might practically eliminate the dampening feature. I really appreciate your help with this. I have a 2 hp Johnson Sea Horse outboard on my 1983 Montgomery 15. I am ready to purchase a brand new outboard because I need peace of mind for going across the Catalina Channel. I have the old style motor mount that is not adjustable. I am asking for any advice about engines from anyone who is willing to share their experience and opinions so that I can make the wisest choice when I shop for an engine. I am also willing to make adjustments to my existing motor mount if it is necessary. Your input is greatly appreciated.

Paul, The previous owner is the person who modified the mount to allow for tilt and to deal with vibration he encountered with the engine. I believe he had a Honda, and when he replaced it with the Suzuki, he modified the mount. I will send photos and measurements later today. Want to be clear, this was Forrest Meadows’ idea and execution. (previous owner). It works well. Welding is planned at edges of plate (upper and lower edges). Your idea for an extension may work dependent upon clearance for the engine. I will get photos/dimensions posted later today. For piece of mind, consider a metal oar lock socket in the combing, metal oarlocks and some take apart Aluminum oars. Expect about 2 knots with medium effort. I used the Oceansouth oars, but replaced the nylon/metal oarlocks with stainless from west marine.
