Hi Tom, I have M17 #32 from 2004 and also have an 8 foot boom. I, like you, tend towards having a boom height of about 17-20 inches and have not had any issues with either of my mainsails leech or boom end snagging the backstay. I can send you photos separately to illustrate if you like. Cerulea sails fantastic in this configuration so I'd say don't worry about it and don't bother trimming your boom. And, I'd race anyone if they insisted the performance was increased to any substantial amount by lifting things the extra few inches. My new sails from Yager rock! Bruce.
