Hey Everyone, Mulligan man checking in from AZ. I just saw an awesome site put together by a Potter 19 owner. He has made some really ingenious mods to his boat, (some easy and some pretty elaborate). He also has two trips documented to the San Juan and Gulf Islands. If you are like me...and planning on joining Larry on next years trip, here's some stuff to keep you going through the winter. http://wwp19.home.comcast.net/ Ah.......did I say winter? Yes, I know , this is the time of year I usually start running off at the mouth and bragging about our weather (since we live inside a pizza oven all during the summer!). Well, it'll do you guys good to know that right now as I type its 36 degrees here! Brrrrrrrrrr. Yesterday it blew all day long over 35 knots. Our lake looked like a washing machine. It was supposed to drop to a steady 20 with gusts to aound 30 before dark and we contemplated taking Dauntless out for a late afternoon romp....but the wind never let-up. 30 with gusts to 40 is not what I call fun..more like if you get back with all your fingers intact the day was a success. I actually went down to the boat (mainly to check on it). I quickly realized that whatever the wind chill was....it was too cold to have any fun. It's supposed to "warm" up to around 60, though, today. Winds are supposed to be down to 10-20. Who knows? maybe I'll bundle up and venture out! I try to get some pics if we do and put them on the site. I know, I know.....were all a bunch of cold weather wussys down here! Which brings up another crazy point. Can you believe that Dauntless' website has had over 10,000 hits in less than a year. I'd have lost a bet on that one. I haven't even really updated it in quite a while (since we started sailing her! hahaha). Anyways, that goes to show ya how many folks really love the Montgomery boats. They are real crowd pleasers. I consider myself fortunate to have one to call my own. As an added bonus, we've been blessed with making a bunch of new "Monty" friends. How cool is that? We are taking Dauntless down to the Phoenix area (Lake Pleasant) to sail in the Arizona Yacht Club Birthday Regatta. The real reason we are going though is to hook up with some other Monty owners that are attending. Gary O. who posts on this site fairly often, is going to have his 17 there. He's been working on this boat for a long time and done about everything short of.....well.....no...he's done that too. Anyways, We can't wait to see it. If you live in Southern Ca, Az, NM, CO...come sail with us. It's a three day event. The regatta is actually a "Lukemia Cup" race so all proceeds go to a good cause. What about you Idaho guys?! I know you guys travel! Come on down and "freeze" with us! You can strut around in your t-shirts and shorts (no Speedos please) and make fun of all of us whimpy southerners! (That includes you Jason T. ! I know you read this!) What will the weather be? Who the heck knows! But...it'll be fun and that's the name of the game. If enough 17's show you could probably have your own class. I know that 2 or three have already comitted. The weekend of Jan 12,13 and 14. Last but not least I have some left over Monty shirts hats and mugs. If you can't decide what to get that Monty friend of yours for Christmas....... I don't have all sizes left but let me know what you want and I'll let you know if I have it. If you forgot what they looked like here's the link to the site. www.havasumontgomerys.funtigo.com Hope everyone is enjoying their Holidays. Hi Sean and Jo, My husband Marek and I just go a 17, # 332, an '81. She's in the marina in San Pedro, CA, as we do not have a trailer, and want to sail frequently. Her centerboard is stuck. The seller had it sitting with the board down for 15 years in a San Diego marina, cleaned the board and retracted it for trailer delivery, and now it won't come down. I was interested to know more about the ballast replacement job you did on your 23, as the guy at Montgomery Boats that I spoke to thinks its the rusted/swollen ballast that's keeping the board stuck in the trunk. How long did the job take you (4months?) How much did it cost? Is it possible to do the same renovation on the 17? How different is the construction of the keel in the 17 and 23? How did you know you had water in the keel (the outside of our keel looks normal)? Do you know if the ballast is open to the bilge? I keep hearing water when I step on my cabin sole (liner) and I wonder what it looks like down there. I've already wet vac'ed some water out, but couldn't get to the water sitting in the part of the bilge just aft of the mast support post. Since you used to have the '79 # 313, I thought yours might be very similar to mine. What's your advice? Thanks for your time! Helen :-) At 09:36 AM 11/30/2006, you wrote:
