On the last San Juan cruise, Dick Lane had one of these to power his inflatable dinghy. It was an impressive motor, with a huge prop for an electric, and seemed to have tons of power; much more than the trolling motors type electrics. It looked like it would be a great motor for a sailor who wasn't likely to motor long stretches had a way to recharge every night. Dick sails a NonSuch 26 and is able to recharge it off his diesel, making that a good arrangement for him. Larry On Sun, 11 Nov 2007 15:05:24 -0800 "Tom Jenkins" <tjenk@gte.net> writes:
Hello All,
I am wondering if anyone has considered the Torqeedo electric outboard for a Montgomery 15 or 17. I saw them in a West Marine catalog and studied the factory website in some detail (www.torqeedo.com); they appear promising unless one needs to motor for miles in dead calm. With the integral rechargeable battery, they should push the 17 a couple of miles at 3 or 4 knots, and with an extra 24 volt battery (or the onboard bank if you have two that can be rigged in series) you would get maybe 10 or 12 miles. The 25 lb weight and folding feature, plus the possibility for eliminating gasoline and noise onboard, are enticing.
