Centerboard pennant question
Having just owned M17 #622 (2003) for a little over a year, I am not sure what shape the centerboard pennant line is in. So far so good, but I want to do some preventative maintenance on it and try to be prepared with the correct materials. I can sling it up off the trailer to check it at a friends shop with his large forklift. There is a chandlery not to far that I can go to when I do the deed. I am asking what I am going to see when I do this. 1. Does the C/B drop far enough to expose the line? 2. Will I have to remove the pin I have seen discussed on this forum to get access to the line? 3. How is the line fastened to the board? Is the rope line spliced to a wire? Looped through an eye in the board or with a knot in a recess? Thanks for any advice. Bill M17 Makin' Time * *
Great questions, Bill. As the owner of #633 I'd be interested in the same information. Hi Bill... The board has to be removed when the boat is on a hoist. (or lifted up) You cannot see the knot by lowering the board. You have to remove the forward 3/8 stainless pin, just tap it sideways and be ready to catch the board. Lower the entire board down. The knot that holds the board is in a recess thru a side hole. To keep the knot from bulging we remove the innards (core) of the line. (8 inches) and tie a figure eight knot with the 'skin' (outer sheath) of the 5/16 inch line. Use the old line to feed the new line up thru the trunk. Raise the board, shove in the pin part way, coat the pin with 5200, shove it home and dab some 5200 on either side and cover with a square of tape. Don't forget to gently lower the board with the new line until it won't go down anymore; then raise it up about 1.5 inches and tie a knot in the line to keep it from going down any further. Lowering the board too far until it hits the inside face of the trunk will break the board eventually. Fair winds Bob (949) 489-8227

Bill, I changed the pendant in my M-17 (hull 265) a couple of years back and will do it again this next season. It requires raising the hull enuf to lower the board all the way to expose the connection. You must remove the stop pin thru the fixed keel to allow the board to lower all the way. In my M-17 the centerboard connection is with a SS clevis with 5/16" braid connected with an eye splice. Make sure that the clevis is narrow enuf to not wedge in the trunk. Joe...let it go a couple of more years. That synthetic rope doesn't rot much; and it only has to lift about 22 pounds. The older boats with the 165 pound cast iron boards probably need more scrutiny. Any centerboard that takes a WINCH to move up and down will have much more stress (on the rope and the Captain). It's not a fun thing to crank up a heavy board with a winch everytime you go sailing.
