I sold my M-17 a while ago and the new owner had a barrier coat and bottom paint applied including removing the centerboard and replacing. The boat was launched and taken to her slip. She noticed water in the bilge pumped it out but it filled up the next day and she pumped it again. She can't find the source so I am reaching out here to see if anyone has experienced this. The boat is a Bob boat built in 2000. She got underneath the cockpit and can not find any water leaking inside the hull and draining into the bilge. One possibility was the tube the centerboard line goes through but She does not think that is the issue either. I owned the boat since 2008 and has been on the hard for about 6 years. During my ownership I have not experienced this and she has never been beached, knocked anything on the bottom etc. so this is quite surprising. Any help or ideas would be appreciated. First guess: The person(s) prepping for bottom paint used an aggressive sander and were not careful, didn't sand by hand, the laps. how much water? Did it rain? does it have cockpit drain valves? open/ closed? what ever it is, it's likely minor,Stan On Friday, April 1, 2022, 07:52:59 AM PDT, Jim Ellsworth <jellsworth603@gmail.com> wrote: I sold my M-17 a while ago and the new owner had a barrier coat and bottom paint applied including removing the centerboard and replacing. Verified it is salt water. Mary inspected the hull pretty closely so likely coming into the keel somewhere. She is going to get some good light down there, empty the bilge then see if she can see where the water is entering. If unable to locate then she will pull the boat out of the water at the yard fill the bilge and see if there is water coming out of the keek somewhere. I will keep the group posted when we find the answers. Jim On Fri, Apr 1, 2022 at 9:24 AM AT&T Account <stanpfa@pacbell.net> wrote:

Jim, On my M17 (which was a much older model) it was the cockpit drain tubes which had corroded to the point of leaking and allowing mystery water to appear in the bilge. Those 1.5" diameter tubes were glassed in below the waterline and the cockpit drain hoses connected to the metal ends of the tubes where they projected beyond the end of the glass. It took me a while to find where the water in my bilge was coming from but I finally slithered under the cockpit and inspected the drains with the boat in the water. I don't know if your boat was constructed the same way, but I would definitely check if there was any possibility that those drains could be compromised. Thanks Mark. Salt water tells me that “perhaps” water is coming up the fiberglass tube we install for the pendant. Hopefully they didn’t drop the hull when they had the boat on the hoist… (It happens) cracking, flexing to open up something. The new owner could pull the boat to the trailer and fill the bilge with water and see where it drips overnight. Bob Sent from my iPad

Mary did go down to the boat this morning and did find water weeping in where there is a small crack around where the bulkhead for the v berth is located. From her description I can't really see in my mind where it is, but she is going to see if she can get some pictures tomorrow (she had some business today and will check back up this afternoon). Ok I have a bit more accurate description from Mary. It is not under the v-berth. "One crack is about an inch aft of the v-berth in the middle of the salon and right in the middle of a little round quarter size smooth depression in the sole. Another crack is just forward of where the tube for the control line enters the floor. Third crack is on the starboard side of the hull about three strakes up from the bilge. First crack around 1" long, second around 2" long and third around 4" long." She will get some pictures tomorrow which I will share. Regardless of what one sees, the only way to really find the leak is to haul the boat. Then remove everything from the boat and flood the inside of the boat through all the lockers. ☺😀😀 DON'T BOTHER ASKING HOW I KNOW THIS. 2X in 7 years due to loading of the boat on trailer bunks improperly causing cracks in the hull over winter storage. You would think that one time would have been enough to learn the lesson. Sadely for some of us repetition is necessary. 🤐 George Merry Helen II 96 M15 #602 "We Can Not Control the Wind But We Can Adjust Our Sails" On Fri, Apr 1, 2022 at 2:01 PM Jim Ellsworth <jellsworth603@gmail.com> wrote:

Thanks for the input George. What brand of trailer do you have? I am surprised that would happen with a 15, much lighter than the weight of a 17. Mary is planning to take the boat back to the yard and have it hauled and will do what you said, fill with water and see where the leaks are.

Hi Dave, The boat was towed on its own trailer and when it left my house it only had the bow eye attached and my one strap that goes over the boat at the end of the trailer. I don't know if he added more but interesting you mentioned this as my Melonseed was delivered to me last week and it had the normal strap at the end of the trailer but the driver attached another one at about the middle. I noticed on the roller that the forward part of the boat rests on was smashed flat. That boat only weighs a couple hundred pounds so I am thinking the strap caused the compression of the roller so I can see how that could cause a problem. Tomorrow she will probably have some pictures I will post that shows the cracks. Pacific worked on the trailer a year or so ago but they have done all of the Bob 17's and I think you used them on the Sages so hard to think they could have caused any harm. Not sure about the yard Mary used to do the bottom paint. I will ask Mary if there were multiple straps holding the boat down when it arrived at her house. Anyway I don't think anyone will claim responsibility so hopefully a repair can be made without too much expense for Mary. I would buy the boat back and do it myself but I think she really likes the boat so we will see in the next few days what she finds out and what the cost may be to repair her. Since you are a local WA guy do you know of a yard that has done any extensive work on Monty's? Anyway thanks for your input and I will keep you posted on what I find. Well, I posted about this last night but I don't see my post showing up, so I will try again. I found the leak that Jim described (I bought his boat). About one inch aft of the bulkhead that supports the aft end of the v-berth, on the cabin sole, right in the center, is a small round depression in the fiberglass about the size of a quarter. From looking at the boat drawings, it looks like it is right above the pivot pin. There is a crack about 1" long across that small round area and I can watch water weeping slowly out of that crack. If I could figure out a way to post a photo, I would do that but there does not seem to be a photo option here - I can email one to anyone who asks. I have posted on the facebook page as well. The cabin sole was covered by a small carpet when I bought the boat and put it in the yard for the bottom paint job, so I don't know if the crack was there before the bottom job. Can I fix this in the water with something like marine tex? If I haul it on the trailer, can I fix it from above with real epoxy? Or do I need to get under the boat and fix it from the inside of the centerboard trunk? And, what could hav caused this? I am not sure of the purpose or cause of that little round depression in the glass.

Hi skipper Campbell,I didn't get any of your photos. Not sure why.I can't help with the solution, however, I have a M15 with a similar problem. I appreciate everyone pitching in to troubleshoot on this. Just to respond to the suggestions to date: 1. there was NO strap across the middle of the boat - just the one Jim put across the cockpit and the bow strap. 2. I watched the yard lift the boat off the trailer, block it, and put it into the water. No drops. 3. I also was around a lot when the boat was prepped and painted. The guy working on the boat is VERY knowledgeable and reputable here, there was no sanding through. 4. Re suggestions on the Facebook page related to scuppers - there are NO thru-hulls below the waterline on the boat, and no fittings that penetrate the hull below the waterline. The bilge pump is manual and empties about a foot above the waterline. My cockpit drains into the stern lazarette which drains overboard above the waterline. There are no rusty metal tubes leaking into the lazarettes After crawling all through the boat and running my hands over literally every square inch of the hull, I have found ONE culprit, which is located in the salon, on the centerline, just aft of the short bulkhead that supports the after end of the v-berth. In the photo, You can see a small smooth round depression about the size of a circle with a crack in it, and I can wipe it dry and stand there and watch it weep (trust me, I was on the verge of doing the same!!!!). So, what is that round depression about? What might have caused the crack? What can/should I do to fix it? I don’t want to just shove marine tex in there when there might be some wood getting wet and rotting below. Ideas?

Mary- Could you send me a photo of the depression please? I'm curious. I'm at jmbn1@outlook.com. Thanks. Hey Jerry, I am the prior owner. I met you and you saw the boat in Havasu one year, it has a green hull if you remember. The boat has been in SoCal it's entire life until Mary purchased her in November last year. She is in WA. The boat has never had bottom paint but for her use she had a barrier coat and bottom paint applied which included removing the centerboard and painting that as well. I purchased the boat in 2008. did 3 weeks in the San Juans in 2009, several trips to Catalina and tons of sailing from San Diego to Ventura and have never experienced any leakes. She has been on the hard for around 7 years and last year was trailered to Pacific for some trailer upgrades then down to my house in Temecula where she has been for a year. Because of my many years of use I am sure any manufacturing issues would have come up during my ownership so I am thinking something was damaged either at Pacific or at Mary's yard. I don't think we will ever know exactly what happened. So from what you are saying she needs to pull the boat, put water inside the cabin and hopefully see where it exits on the outside correct? This would have been a lot easier to find without the new bottom paint applied. Thanks for your input, Mary, myself and others seeing our postings are at a loss for what really happened.
