Centerboard on M15
Hi I am a new owner of an older (1983) M15. The boat appears in good shape but was delivered without the centerboard installed. The centerboard is fairly small, weighs about 40 lbs or so. And on quick inspection appears not to have a hinge pin. The problem is - I'll be darned if I can figure out what to do with it!!! There apears to be no place in the cabin to operate it from! 1. I assume its installed from the outside (bottom) - but how? 2. How necessary is the centerboard ? I have had other shoal keel/CB boats where the CB was only used for upwind work and then was not much of an improvement. Any suggestions/advice greatly appreciated!! Bob, The center board is quite important for optimum operation of the M-15. The board is installed from under the boat. Looking at the keel you will find a place for a pivot pin (rod) at the front. The centerboard also has a hole for the pin and a place for a lanyard which is used to raise and lower the board from the cockpit. Feed the lanyard up through a hole under the cockpit companionway (which also serves as the drain for the cockpit). There should be a block of wood on the floor covering the drain. The lanyard is fed through that block and through the hole just forward of the downhaul. It locks into the cam cleat on the starboard side of the downhaul. Perhaps Bob Egg can send a schematic from his Shop Plans. Stan Winarski
Bud, Congratulations on your new ownership. The archive does have a posting from Jerry Montgomery on the right length to tie off the stopper knot. The line for the centerboard control should be a non-stretch braided Dacron. I found a local launching area which has a hoist. If the stern and bow cleats are original and tight you can lift the empty M15 from the bow and stern cleats. I also ran lines from the hoist around the hull in front and in back of the keel just to be safe. The braided Dacron line should have the core removed for the first three inches. A stopper knot will be tied in the remaining outer braid once you have threaded the line down from the cockpit, through the keel area, through the back edge of the center-board (pre-drilled hole should already be there)and into the 50 cent size hole in the side of the center-board near the top rear. You then tie the stopper knot and snug it up in the 50 cent size hole. The stopper knot should not extend beyond either side of the centerboard or it will jamb when raised. If your centerboard does not have three pre drilled holes one for the forward pin, one for the stopper knot and one for the line to pass through from the keel, you have a different problem. If this is the case make another posting. Thanks Doug Kelch M15 #310 --- Bud Holzschuh <schuh8@yahoo.com> wrote: > Hi > > I am a new owner of an older (1983) M15.
