I'm considering the Honda 2HP or the Yamaha 2.5HP motors to replace the electric troller on my M15. It has the fixed engine mount and I'm therefore leaning toward the long-shaft Honda, since Yamaha doesn't offer the 2.5 with a long shaft. Is there anyone with a fixed mount on their M15 who has experience with the Yamaha? Is there a cavitation problem in chop or when going forward to raise and lower sails? I've searched the archives, but can't find any info about that. Any ideas? David =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= David W. Wood -=- dwood@woodatwork.com 1981 M15 -=- Hull #163
My experience is with a 4hp Mariner short shaft on a fixed mount. The exhaust does come out of the water if I go forward with the engine idling but if I were to do it all over again I would still get the short shaft on a fixed mount. I like simplicity and the fact that my motor won't drag in the water, when I have it raised, is a plus. I can also pull the boat out of the water without worrying if the motor is up or down; I don't know if this is an issue with the long shaft. If my Mariner weren't running so well I would seriously consider the Yamaha; I'm not too comfortable with Honda's choices of either a centrifugal clutch or an always engaged motor.
