installing cam cleats for jib sheets
Hello Everyone, The jib sheet clamcleats that came with my M15 is worn. I'd like to replace them with cam cleats. I want to know how to remove the old clam cleat holes and put in new ones for the cam cleats. The clam cleats are oriented vertically whereas the cam cleats are arranged horizontally. What do you suggest I use to fill the clam cleat holes? I see both fiberglass fix kit and epoxy kit. Should I use the fiberglass stuff or should I use the epoxy stuff? Or something else? Also, I have never worked fiberglass before so I don't know how they behave when drilled. How should I put in the new screw holes for the cam cleats? Thanks! Donglai M15 #612
Dongiai, Changing to cams from clams is pretty simple. I used Harken 150's with extreme angle fairleads so I can sheet the jib from the high side without leaning low: a comfort when things are hairy. The trick with drilling fiberglass for any through fastening is to over-drill the hole, fill with thickened epoxy, let it kick and then re-drill to the correct size, bedding the fitting in polysulfide or similar (not 5200 unless you never expect to remove the fitting). Mix enough epoxy to fill the old holes at the same time. I use plastic packing tape on the inside to keep the goop in place until it hardens. You can make a near invisible repair to the holes with a bit of gel coat or paint. I suggest you invest in one of Don Casey's books like "Good Old Boat" or "Hull and Deck Repair" or similar. Lots of good info there. Cheers, George Burmeyer "Haiku" 1986 M15 #385 Santa Rosa, CA On Sep 15, 2006, at 10:16 PM, Donglai Gong wrote:

Had them for the jib sheets on my other boat and they work just as well on the 17. Tim D
