Re: M_Boats: Hydeaway 2 has new owners. Thanks Gail & James!
Hyde way 2 is, as we speak, on her way to the San Francisco Bay Area. Specifically, to Forestville CA. We plan to sail her on the lakes, maybe the Bay, and do a trip or two up the Delta. Question for you all… The previous owners of my M15 mounted a depth / fish finder on the wall between the cockpit and cabin. See attached photo. Unfortunately, this ruins the most comfortable spot to hang out in the cockpit! I’d like to relocate the depth/fish finder to a board that will fit into the bottom slat of the hatch boards when under way. My question is what’s best method for filling the 3 small holes that will be left in the fiberglass? The screws are probably #8 or #10. I’m thinking of using thickened epoxy from the inside, then a tad of gel coat touch up on the outside. If that sounds right, the second question would be if there’s any tricks to matching this color of gel coat. I’ve done a fair amount of fiberglass and gel coat repair on kayaks and assume it’s the same, but I want to make sure I’m using best practices here. Thanks! Hi David, My approach would be to put a piece of painter's tape over the holes on the inside of the cabin, and then fill the screw holes with a bit of WEST Epoxy with some thickener to add body to the epoxy. Then you can level the epoxy on the outside; and if a dimple is still to be seen after it hardens; fill it with a little more thickened epoxy. With careful work you should have an almost flat surface. A bit of sanding with 220 grip paper and a bit of wax; after the epoxy is fully cured and hard, should give you a nice surface and the holes should be hardly visible. You see them because you filled them; but anyone else in the cockpit would have to be shown the filled holes to even recognize that holes once were there. If you are 6 feet away you can't see them.... Connie
