Hi Tom, My M17 Lily may be the one that Ron spotted on Mission Bay, as I keep her in mast-up storage in the parking lot at the mission bay yacht club, launching with a hoist. It is sunny today, so I'm headed down there soon for a little lunchtime sail. I've got to shake off the cold from the holiday week spent with family in Cleveland! My 11 and 8-year old kids love sailing in mission bay, since there are no waves and they can go swimming off the boat in the summer. For more adventure, I like to make the run around Point Loma to Shelter Island for a weekend (about 16-18 miles depending on how far out you have to go to stay away from the rudder-grabbing kelp), or even all the way to Chula Vista in San Diego's south bay, about 30 miles sailing all told. If you are coming west, I'd recommend Dana Point. There are nice ramps and a clean marina with guest slips there, and from DP it is a 20 mile run down the coast to Oceanside or 12 miles up to Newport. A fun day's sail is up to Newport for lunch, then downwind back to Dana for the night. Matt On Dec 31, 2010, at 11:17 AM, judy casino wrote:

Hi Matt, Many thanks for the suggestions. We visit our daughter near Balboa Park a few days a month, so Mission Bay is probably our best bet for some sailing with the family. I gather the yacht club has a hoist that does not interfere with the mast, but I can't envision dropping the boat in the water for a lunchtime sail. Do you keep it in a slip or mooring while you are in town? I was thinking of renting a guest slip at Driscoll's Marina for a week at a time, but I don't think they have dry storage, so we would have to drag the boat half way across the state every trip. You probably have the ideal setup, since you can trailer your boat to other places without pulling it each time, and you don't get the bottom fouled. I should think a cruise to Ensenada would be even more of an adventure than San Diego Bay, but a beat back uphill might be a challenge. I have to admit I have yet to try an overnight run on my 17. Tom, I live here in San Diego, so the boat stays in the dry storage whenever it isn't being trailered somewhere else. I used to keep it in a slip at Driscoll's, but bottom maintenance and slip fees were costly (more than membership and storage at the YC!) Now, I can just drop the mast and I'm on my way. The cheapest guest slips in San Diego are at the Harbor Police docks on Shelter Island. They are first come first served, and there's always room for a 17 on an inside slip that the deep keel boats can't reach. $10 per night per slip. The Shelter Island launch ramp is a challenging one though, with a stone breakwall just behind you as you pull off the trailer. Next time you are in town, let me know and we'll arrange a sail on Lily. Matt On Jan 1, 2011, at 2:11 PM, Tom Jenkins wrote:

Matt, Thanks for the kind offer. Since our boat seems to be virtually identical to yours but for the sail color, I would certainly feel at home. See you at Havasu in February! Tom On Jan 2, 2011, at 10:19 AM, Matthew Marx wrote:
