M15 folding rudder
Is there a folding rudder ( folds up out of water) made for the M15? It would be great for the SV Pelican that is docked in a slip Thanks Capt Jim Get Outlook for iOS<https://aka.ms/o0ukef>

Hopefully the fiberglass option has the same shape, weight, and size of the original wood one. The reason I say that is that my M15 came with a Ruddercraft that was like 6 inches longer than the original, and so much heavier. The person who had it made did it because he had too much weather helm and wanted to counteract that. I adjusted the rig for better balance, and went back to the original wood rudder. What a difference. It is light, responsive, and works correctly in the clever kick up arrangement of the original M15. So much better performance. I understand your reasoning with regards the slip etc, but I would be careful not to compromise the boat performance when sailing. I sold my M15 and now sail a SCAMP that I built. But the M15 is a wonderful craft. -----Original Message----- From: Jim Sadler <jimsadler@jascopacific.com> Sent: Monday, July 26, 2021 11:47 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: M15 folding rudder Thanks Bob -----Original Message----- From: Bob Eeg <montgomeryboats@hotmail.com> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2021 9:09 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: M15 folding rudder Ruddercraft and get the fiberglass option. Thanks Skipper If I could just replace the mahogany rubber with a fiberglass version that could stay out side. Ideally the physical size and weight would be the same and the performance would be the same. Jim. The mahogany rudder should be out of the water when kicked up. With three or more coats of varnish applied each winter, something to do boat related during the cold rain& snow season, the finish should be fine (I've never had issues). Or is your issue that the rudder isn't raised 180deg up? A RudderCraft HDPE rudder WILL warp if stored in any position but laying flat or when on the transom fully down. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! Thanks Dave What is a rudder craft HDPE rudder? BTW Pelican is berthed in Oceanside Marina ...no cold rain or snow. The real issue is that every time I want to go sailing I don’t want to have to mount and dismount the rudder to stow in the cabin. Gotten real lazy in my old age Capt. RudderCraft is a maker of aftermarket rudders. HDPE is plastic (like fake wood decking boards, park beaches and cutting boards). It is non-structural and will warp. Many RudderCraft HDPE rudders have snapped under load. RudderCraft now has a fiberglass rudder that shouldn't warp and if correctly engineered not snap. As expected costs more than the HDPE model. A RudderCraft rudder is a complete replacement of the M15's stock rudder assembly. Uses lines to control the kickup - which I personally dislike. MUCH prefer the kickup design in the M15 and Sage 17/SC/15. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! Interesting. Mine was HDPE, and I hated it. Bad shape, really heavy, too long, and would not work with the great M15 rudder cheek mechanism. The wood board is correctly shaped, light, responsive. Unless the fiberglass one is like that I would skip this idea for the sole purpose of storage in a slip. Hey, to each his own, but the point of the boat is to enjoy the sailing! M15's are like the BMW's of pocket cruisers. Rudder craft is excellent. I have bought rudders from them for other boats and they are excellent, with much improved windward performance, less weather helm. I contacted them re M15 rudders and are happy to build them. $$$, but worth it. Sent from my iPhone

Yes skipper It kicks up to about 90 deg but I would like it to go to vert ( 180 deg) while in the skip. I would like to not have to bring the rudder into the cabin when in the slip. I would like the rudder to be vert and the tiller to be vert while in the slip. Is there a fiberglass replacement rudder to replace the mahogany rubber that can with the M15 Thanks Capt Jim SV Pelican -----Original Message----- From: Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> Sent: Sunday, July 25, 2021 9:12 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: M15 folding rudder Jim: Your M15 doesn't have a kickup rudder? :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! Hi All, Someone had asked recently about a low rider trailer For a Sage 17 and would it fit a Monty 17. Dave Scobie said they could work but had to be modified. My CFO just told me that we had one extra trailer for a Sage 17 and he would sell it for a good price. Dave would have to explain how to modify it for a Monty 17. If anyone is still interested? sal
The Sage custom 17 trailer DOSEN'T fit a M17. The hull shapes are significantly different. To use a Sage 17 custom trailer the supports for the bunk board brackets require modification: - cut off, angles and heights changed, welded back on and then the trailer regalvanized. or - cut off and adjustable bunkboard brackets bolted to the frame. The spots on the frame where the bunk supports were removed then need regalvanized) Either way the boat must be lifted and held in slings over the trailer to adjust the bunks (this is how the bunks on the 'off the shelf' adjustable shelf trailers are set). If you have access to a gantry not terribly challenging - I've done it multiple times for folks that bought 'standard' S17 trailers (an off the shelf trailer that would fit the M17) and helping people with misadjusted M17 trailers. Besides setting the bunks to confirm to the hull there is the height of the bunks to so the keel is just sitting on the keel bunk - want the hull and shoal keel sharing the boat's weight. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site!
