Re: M_Boats: Honda engines and ethanol
Larry: the Honda's will run 10% ethanol, but not more than that, - http://engines.honda.com/parts-and-support/fuel-recommendations the issue to be aware: the ethanol is a good cleaner so gunk in the fuel tanks can be moved into the engine's fuel system. good fuel filters are important ... and change those filters regularly. my guess is your boat has a plastic fuel tank. wouldn't hurt to confirm that the tank is clean and the tank is rated for ethanol (fiberglass tanks, in general, are not good with ethanol. the C-Dory i was on last summer had a single plastic tank mounted on the starboard side at the transom (outboard of the engine well). the big issue is ethanol loves to soak up water. using fuel treatments, such as Sea Foam and Sta-Bil (marine) are important (even if you find a source for ethanol free gas). use Sea Foamand Sta-Bil together. during the season keep that tank topped off to reduce condensation. you will need to choose between a full tank for the winter, or drain everything so the tank is empty (i bet a C-Dory forum has folks with recommendations). :: Dave Scobie -------------------------------------------- On Tue, 4/15/14, Hughston, Larry@DGS <Larry.Hughston@dgs.ca.gov> wrote: Hey Bones, this is Larry in Sacramento. I am prepping my old M-15 #189 for sale. It shined up on the hull quite nicely. Here is my main question. With the "new" boat (C-Dory 22') I now have 2 Hondas on the back to care for and my problem is I need to find a source of fuel that has no Ethanol. I am not sure if my engines are susceptible to Ethanol (10%) damage. The engines are 2006 vintage. How do I confirm that these engines will not be affected by the new fuels here in California? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again for your vast knowledge and your sharing. Have you considered writing a book of your experiences? You already have a following in this forum. Thanks....Larry Hughston in Sacramento (with proportionally more river than lake...Folsom is at 50% and few ramps)
