Re: M_Boats: montgomery_boats Digest, Vol 77, Issue 67
Snowbirds going North to Jackson Lake, Jenny Lake or Yellowstone Lake should stop by Bear Lake on the way North. It is approximately 35 miles long and 7 miles wide and sometimes called the "Carribean of the Rocky's" because of its amazing clear blue color that reminds one of the Carribean. Bear Lake Marina State Park has an excellent launch and slips for overnighters. You will see my M-17 "Fore Play" waiting quietly for my return. My old storm jib doesn't go with my new gaff rig so $100 takes it.
It was made locally by Potomac sailmakers, 5 oz cloth,? flat cut, probably about 60 or 70 % of a working jib.

I have been considering the purchase of an older (early-mid 80s) Montgomery 15 but have been put off thus far by some of the reports of problems with the steel ballast. Can anyone help calibrate these concerns by saying how widespread and how severe these problems are? Do they occur in all steel-ballasted M-15s as they age, or only those that have been kept in the water most of the time? Does it represent a minor inconvenience that can tolerated, or a downright risk of the keel coming apart? Are there measures that can be taken to prevent or remedy the problem, short of major surgery? Your collective wisdom would be appreciated. Thanks. The new guy.

I guess I was one of the unlucky ones with my steel keel.
To put it another way
If two identical M-15 were for sale for the same price I would buy the one with the lead ballast and keel.

Late breaking news.....
With very pleasant breezes on a typical foggy day in Monterey, Montgomery 15 boats placed First and Second in the small boat division at the Cruiser Challenge X hosted by the Potter Yachters and MPYC. That dirty, rotten braggart, Blake Reimer and IOTA took First Place with two seconds and a first for the 3 race series in a very tough tussle with 'Midget' an M15 owned and deftly handled by defending champion Bob Truman, who took two bullets and a fourth for Second Place honors. Finishing out 7th were M15 owners George and Debbie Morrison who improved considerably between Challenge IX and X.
Given that a well sailed M15 will be faster than a well sailed Potter 14, the finish line was a 3-way tussle between IOTA, MIDGET and the JEAN ALDEN, a beautiful, black, 15ft catboat built and skippered by Mike Higgins, who took 3rd for the day. Based on the first two races, Bob clearly had the quicker boat and better handling but faltered in the final race when he chose to start the race with a reefed main in the quickening afternoon breezes. Reimer took note and quickly hanked on his new EP 'storm jib', keeping his main full and that seemed to make the big difference as Mr. Truman dropped back several places to fourth.
There was at least one M-17 in the 'big' boat class. 'Six', owned by - and I am embarassed to say how age affects my memory - Whats-his-name. Trading his older M15 for the new red striped beauty, racing for the first time in the new boat he held on for 5th place.
What a good time we all had! And Montgomery boats are FUN to race against each other! They are remarkably quick and responsive to tiller and trim adjustments. When I got IOTA upwind in the breeze and dialed in, you could feel her accelerate like a horse turning for home. It's a shame we can't find a way to get a bunch of us together for a shoot out every now and then...
It was a really good weekend with the Potters and I really appreciate the effort they made to put it on.

Bill,
It has been years, but the family and I twice did a week of sailing on Jackson lake. The lake is beautiful and quite a bit warmer than Yellowstone Lake; warm enough for swimming. We entered Teton Park from the South entrance, and at the ranger station purchased a season sailing permit.
At that time (16 years ago) there were 3 marinas on the lake and we launched at the southern most; which had a very nice ramp and lots of vehicle+trailer parking. For the duration of our trip we took moorings each night at the two southern most marinas. As I recall, the northern most marina did not have guest moorage, but had excellent ice cream!
Both trips were a great vacation. I believe you can call and make mooring resv. There are not a lot of places on the lake to anchor for the night. Mostly because the shallower areas were heavily infested with mosquitoes and leaches.
The marina in the middle border a Park campground it was great fun to go to the evening Ranger presentations. This same marina offered water taxi service; you honk your horn and out they would come with a dingy to give you a ride to shore (the kids thought that was the coolest).
Jackson Lake is a very deep lake and it is thought that the water temp is warmer than Yellow Stone lake due to underwater geo-thermal activity. Overall the water is crystal clear and you would be hard-pressed to find a more beautiful setting.
As I said, it has been a while, but I believe of the two lakes I would favor Jackson Lake due to its accessibility and conveniences.
