4-stroke outboard crankcase oil--close the valves!
Earlier discussions show occasional problems with crankcase oil leaking out of the engine or into the combustion chamber. It is important to store/transport the engine in the correct position, but an added precaution is to slowly crank the engine until it comes up against compression. That closes both the intake and exhaust valves and helps keep stuff like oil and water out of the combustion chamber. --Gary Hyde Pullman, WA gmhyde1@mac.com M17 #637 'Hydeaway 2' "...There's nothing quite like messing about in boats..."

good advice.....I am going to try that next time Gary. I still get a puff of smoke for the first few beats once my Yamaguchi starts up...but my running and idle problems are gone.....since taking the motor to the dealership for a proper service. <should have done it sooner...as advised>
On another note....is it your boat that has a bimini? Thought I may have seen an image in the photo section. If that was you, is it something you put together yourself or a pre-made West Marine unit or what? I am hoping to get something together for next season. Thanks in advance. Tim D M17 #369
Tim: Yes, I installed a bimini. It is from the 2006 West Marine catalog, page 701, model 1907070 made for a power boat. I mounted it on the genoa track aft of the sheet blocks. On Sep 13, 2006, at 9:13 PM, Timtone wrote:
