Hey Bob, Thanks for the advice. I'm a novice at this stuff. Since my boat has never been off the trailer except when floating, I guess I'll have to dive under with a swim mask to see where that knot is and how it is tied. OR, are you talking about a stopper knot topside? My centerboard pendant comes straight up through a hole in the teak board in the cockpit just below the companionway and then I tie it off to a cleat to the right of the mainsheet with a clove hitch. No stopper knot. Should I tie one? I suspect that since I let the pendant all the way down, maybe the knocking I hear is the CB hitting the fwd keel housing... You're just fine. A previous owner obviously just decided to use a bolt and nut. No worries. Normal slapping noise is fine. You do want to make sure the board hangs in the down position on the KNOT in the rope. No hitting noise against the forward face of the trunk when the board is lowered. Yes..tie the knot TOPSIDES... Slowly lower the board while in the water and when it quits going down, raise it about one inch. Tie a knot at that location to keep it from going down to far. Take care Bob

Folks, I am looking for some general advice. Note that this does not have to do with my M-17 but rather a Cape Dory boat (I am looking for a mother ship for my M-10 dinghy), however I am hoping for the groups indulgence. Has anyone had to fix a soft cockpit floor? I have not visited the boat but the broker warned me that the cockpit floor is soft. From what I can read this means that the core, likely balsa, has rotted after being exposed to water for a long time (undoubtedly leaking at the rudder tube floor joint). I have read a few internet sites about the procedure to re-core but would like to hear if anyone in the group has done this. I am most interested in the amount of time required to fix this as it appears to be well within my abilities. I know that it is probably never an issue with the M boats but I also know that we have not always been exclusively M-boat owners. Thanks Robbin 75' M-17 #056, M-10 Tonka Too
