Tim, If memory serves me right, yes, you could probably remove the furler with the mast up. Honestly, I'd probably lower it. I think when you slide the foil off of the headstay there is a piece at the top of the foil, a black cap like thing, that when you get to the point where you have to slide it off the end fitting you may have to unscrew it. But, I don't think that would cause any problems. and ....I have to say that I agree with your reasons for switching back to hank on sails. There is nothing wrong with furlers..but they are a trade off of convenience for performance. Additionaly, if you are stepping and unstepping , and trailering often, they are a pain in the butt. However, I like you have a wife who thought the furler was the cat's meow! Sean
