Does anyone know if this 5 HP Honda engine ( BF5A) will work well on my M-15 with the lifting bracket mount. I believe it has a short shaft but I think my current Yamaha 2.5 also has a short shaft. Is the 60lb weight going to be a problem? Thanks... Lou (M-15 Still The One)
IMO, this size motor on an M15 is overkill. t On Wed, Aug 6, 2008 at 7:44 PM, Lou <capnlou@ec.rr.com> wrote:

the Honda 2H long shaft is a great motor for the M15. my opinon is a 3hp motor would be a perfect fit. anything greater is more motor than necessary. the limit of all 'small' motors is none have a fuel pump so one must fill the tank while hanging over the back of the boat once an hour ... IF ONLY a building would make a 2-3hp motor with a fuel pump!!! dave scobie M15 #288 - SCRED visit Scred's www-site: http://www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred --- On Wed, 8/6/08, Lou <capnlou@ec.rr.com> wrote: From: Lou <capnlou@ec.rr.com> Subject: M_Boats: M-15/Honda BF5A To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Date: Wednesday, August 6, 2008, 10:44 PM Does anyone know if this 5 HP Honda engine ( BF5A) will work well on my M-15 with the lifting bracket mount. LOU AND GARY, I agree that a 5 would be to much for the M-15 and that the 2.5 yamaha would be better. My problem with the 4hp yamaha on my M-17 is weight and bulkyness. It is 65 lbs and because my 17 is an older model with the cutout transom you have to be real careful or the prop will chew a hole in the rudder if you have to go hard over. The 65 lbs weight is not a problem for the boat but for this old fart when mounting and dismounting same. For these reasons then, I am considering a 2.5hp but am concerned that it may not have sufficient poop to fight a stiff head wind when having to power in tight channels. Also, am concerned about vibration. Your experiences will help. Arnold Sharpe, M-17 #265 "LITTLE BREEZE" On Aug 12, 2008, at 10:50 AM, Gary M Hyde wrote:

Arnold, My brother owned Griselda (M17 #14) before I did and he solved the problem of the prop damaging the rudder. He attached a triangular block to each side of the rudder just above the lower gudgeon which limits the rudder angle. The blocks have rubber toilet seat bumpers on them which strike the transom before the rudder strikes the prop. As for vibration, I have all three of the motors he used on Griselda. One is a 6hp single cylinder British seagul with a 5 blade prop and the vibration is awful but the torque is fantastic. The other is an Evinrude Yachtwin 4hp full gearshift two cylinder. The clyinders fire on opposite strokes and it is very smooth. The 4hp is enough against almost any sea and wind conditions. The third motor is a 54 pound thrust MinnKota trolling motor which is good for docking but not strong enough to push against any kind of wind or sea. My choice is definately the Evinrude. The seagull looks really neat especially since I stripped and polished the aluminum parts and the solid brass fuel tank but................. it vibrates and smokes and is not easy to start. So much for tradition. Ron M17 #14 Griselda
