Thanks, Tom and Jane, that's a very comprehensive answer, and confirms my suspicion that there are no silver bullets. Reefing the headsail seems like a workable (and probably economical) approach, but roller reefing sure sounds attractive if the budget will stand it. Switching the jib sheet attachment is a lot easier than actually switching sails. I don't think my jib has reefing cringles, so I guess I'd have to put them in. I suppose this is off topic, but some sailors have fitted their working jib and/or staysail to a small boom to make it self-tacking; possibly such a "boomlet" could accommodate jiffy reef hardware, but one would have to deal with the boom dropping when the halyard is released. There must be many ways to skin this cat, and there are some clever dudes out there.
