While shopping for hatch board material I visited Hardwood Lumber Company in Houston, Tx. On sale was a wood called "sipo" also known as "utile". Turns out that sipo is a type of mahogany imported from central Africa. It is characteristically very much like mahoganys from around the world and is actually classified as a type of mahogany. It is also called utile. It was half the price of "regular mahogany" being 5.50 a board foot as opposed to $11 for mahogany. Both are used in boat building and look very similar. Sipo is also used in flooring and fine furniture so it is tough enough for hatchboards as well as hatches themselves. It works well with power and hand tools also. I have no affiliation with this outlet but this is a new product for me and perhaps it would work out for someone else doing winter projects on their boat. For $65 I was able to purchase one totally knot free board which is 14 inches wide and 9 feet long so all my hatch boards will be clear of knots, will all match, of course and should last a long time with proper protection from UV. Happy dithering.
