fire extinguisher, tiller cleats, mildew, slipcovers, hubs
Anyone have a really slick location for their fire extinguisher on their 17? Mine's currently mounted on the compression post. Handy but in-your-face. Finally, after the second go-round I think I have the mounting for the cam cleats on the tiller dialed in. They clamp on, side by side atop the tiller a bit less than an arm's length from the fwd end; no holes in the tiller. Would be nice if they were more compact, but beggars can't be choosers, I suppose. Should make it real nice for fine-tune adjustments, though. Gotta get the mount coated yet. In the "if I had no bad luck, I'd have no luck at all....." department, the top board of my nice pretty new hatchboards developed a severe case of mildew over the winter. I thought I had the wood thoroughly sealed up with epoxy and varnish, but somehow a big black stripe developed down the face of the top board, from top to bottom and about an inch wide. Downright unsightly, it is. Did I mention that Busca's cushions will now be saved a bit of wear and tear (with a dog aboard it's appreciable) thanks to her new pillow case style slipcovers? So easy to make! Anyone ever have to change the bearings on their trailer? Mine are holding up (knock on wood) but I've never done a trailer axle before and am thinking it would be nice to know what to expect. I have bearing buddies in the ends of the hub. What would be the R/R procedure? I'm guessing there would be a nut inside there somewhere holding the hub on the spindle but don't know for a fact...It's a Trailrite trailer. I've heard of people taking a complete hub assembly with them for a spare, so when I was in the local Tractor Supply I browsed the trailer parts but didn't see anything quite like my hubs (which use lug BOLTS rather than studs/nuts). Webmaster Doug, your latest additions to the web page are superb as usual! Thanks to you and Keith for facilitating the free flow of knowledge! Thanks, Tod
Regarding the fire extinguisher. I now have a fire extinguisher that fits in the shallow starboard locker. I had one that was mounted on the side of the cockpit at deck level aft of the sheet track, but I was always stepping on it, and I finally broke the bracket. ----- Original Message ----- From: <htmills@bright.net> To: "montgomery_boats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Friday, May 09, 2003 12:30 AM Subject: M_Boats: fire extinguisher, tiller cleats, mildew, slipcovers, hubs

Clarence, I'll have to look into that. Currently the stbd locker on Busca contains dock lines, winch handle and sheet-to-tiller do-dads. Do you keep dock lines in the port deep locker? Thanks, Tod
Tod, I keep the dock lines in a plastic box ( with snap-on lid) in the aft locker, located beneath the tiller. Also, when we are at CBC 2003, I'll show you the neat rope bags I use to stow the anchor rodes and never get them tangled.. Assuming its a TrailRite trailer with hub brakes, remove wheel, remove Bearing Buddy (pull off with channel locks), back off brake shoes, extract cotter pin from axle end, remove outer hex nut, slide off keyed washer, remove inner hex nut, wiggle drum and catch outer race, remove drum and pull off with inner race. Renew axle seal in back of drum after replacing wheel bearings. I think that is the drill though it is eight years since I did it on my 23. Dick htmills@bright.net wrote:
