OK, for fear of sounding pretty dumb, I dared not ask until now: As a new M15 owner, a boat without lifelines, how are folks hanging fenders? I can hang one vertical from my single slot teak handhold. Maybe one from the sidestay. But, those two would be quite close together. Then what?? OK, go ahead and make fun of me it you want. :) Padre Jeff
Hi Jeff, I hang my two fat fenders as follows: the forward fender hangs from the forward section of the two-sectioned handrail. The aft fender hangs from the mid-cockpit cleat. Those two locations cushion the boat quite well. The beautiful hull does not rub at all against the dock. I have an '06 M15. Jeff, I gather a 15 has no track like the 17 to adjust the position of the jib sheet block. If it did, you could get a couple of cleats that slide up and down the track. Hanging a fender from a handhold is never the best solution, but I guess you are stuck with it. Tom On Mar 24, 2012, at 4:17 PM, Jeffrey Johnston wrote:

I have 3 FLAT fenders that have a hole in each end. I string them equally on a line I run from bow to stern. They can be moved as needed. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Tom Jenkins Sent: Saturday, March 24, 2012 7:42 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Fenders Jeff, I gather a 15 has no track like the 17 to adjust the position of the jib sheet block. I don't know how far forward the sail track runs on a M15. But I put a midship cleat on my M17 that I use all the time. on my M15 i hung one large fender off the cabintop handrail located on the cabin sliderhatch teak 'rail' (jerry calls these cleats). i adjusted the tie-off to be just a bit forward of the cockpit ... the most wide section of the M15's hull form. when securing the boat at the dock i set the boat, stern and possibly spring line to hold the boat on this one fender. never had an issue in protecting the boat. sometimes i tied a fender to the stern cleat.
I don't know how far forward the sail track runs on a M15.
there are no jib car tracks on a standard M15. the jib sheet runs through a bullseye on the cabin top and then to a cleat (usually a cam cleat). some have had toerail tracks added for using large headsails (ie, spinnakers). at one point my M15 had toerail t-tracks, but these were removed before i purchased the boat (did get the tracks and other hardware in a box of 'boat goodies'). a few M15s also have cabintop jib sheet car tracks (my M15 had these and i found them very helpful i adjusting the jib's shape and increasing performance).
mid-cockpit cleat. Maybe that's another project.
be aware these can be a trip hazard on the combing. i've tripped over the jib sheet winch and jam cleat mounted on my M17's combing (i'm thankful never to have fallen overboard or onto the dock/deck) the cleat can also be in the way if you choose to sit on the combing to help balance the boat. if you do install a cleat be sure to put install a good sized backing plate. :: Dave Scobie :: former M15 owner - www.freewebs.com/m15-named-scred :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA - www.m17-375.webs.com :: Sage Marine - www.sagemarine.com --- On Sat, 3/24/12, Joe Murphy <seagray@embarqmail.com> wrote:

Jeff, P.S. If your vintage M15 does not have a mid-cockpit cleat, you can buy a suction cup fender strap (not as secure) or screw in a cleat to the outer or top surface of the cockpit gunwale at mid-cockpit. The handrail-hanging location on my M15 drops the fender several inches forward of the shroud. Take a piece of 4" long 2" PVC pipe. Cut the pipe lengthwise a width a smidge wider than the bulwark. Drill a 3/8" hole mid length but off center from the lengthwise cut. Run your 1/4" line for the fender thru the hole and put in a stopper knot set to hang the fender just below the gunnel. If the fender doesn't reach the water, the weight/gravity will let it hand just finne. Then you can slide it fore and aft to where you need it.
