Genoa size for gusty lake
Hello fellow Monty owners, I am ordering a genoa to go with my new CDI Furler. I live in Wyoming, and sail on a gusty(up to 30 knots) lake at 6400' . I was about to order a 150% , and my friend who has had a 28' Precision on the lake for 10 years has advised me to go with a 135%. I have sent the measurements for the 133% found on the owners website to the sailmaker, Hood sails in Sausalito. I am waiting for his bid. Any thoughts about this issue ? Also, I saw a great trailer modification for centering the keel using PVC pipe. It was months ago, and I can't remember where that was. Any hints ? Thanks all, Doug Vogel 17' -#325 - Tieline
Doug, there are a couple of mods like this at http://www.msog.org/how-to/how-to.cfm under "Keel Guides", top right of the table. ----- John Tyner M-15 #412 "Chimpanzee" On 7/19/2011 5:53 PM, Doug Vogel wrote:

Doug, In gusty conditions with a 150% you'll be sailing a lot of the time with the genoa partially furled, which detracts some from sail shape and windward performance. I went through the same tradeoff and settled on a 135%. I can sail it single-handed without furling in moderate conditions, and a couple of turns keeps me going up to 20 +, with a reef in the main. I highly recommend the Patterson genoa with a luff pad, which keeps the sail shape pretty good up to two or three turns. On the other hand, I would like a 150% sometimes when racing, but you can't have everything. Sigh .....
