I recently purchased a 1977 M-17 and Shoreline trailer in September from a fellow in Virginia. Pennsylvania (my home state) will not give me a registration because the VIN plate is missing. Hence, I can't prove that the trailer is the same as the one for which the VIN number is shown on the title. Virginia DMV won't talk to me because I am not a resident of Virginia. The previous owner won't talk to me because he has his money. Does anyone know if the VIN number is perhaps stamped somewhere on the frame so that an inspection mechanic can verify that the VIN number on the title and the VIN number on the trailer match. Thanks for any information or suggestions. ________________________________________ PeoplePC Online A better way to Internet http://www.peoplepc.com
If you Google it you do not find much... One of the message boards has the lollowing "Have you found a VIN # anywhere? The VIN may have a date encoded in there. On my trailer the VIN is on a plate up near the tongue. The last two digits are 84 which I am assuming means it is an '84 model (same as my boat)" Then in other posts, it says someone thinks they have relocated to Santa Fe, Texas. Another says they went out of business in the early 90's. Another says they moved to Florida. If you do not find any number I wonder if it would be appropriate to use a set of stamps, grind an area smooth, punch in the number and repaint. The inspector would have no trouble finding that number... The stamps are sold as sets. and in various sizes (height of letters) 1/8, 1/4" etc. I quickly found a 1/4" combo set at Harbour Freight PN: 90125-2VGA $9.99 http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/displayitem.taf?function=Search Happy Stamping Bill P.s. you do have a bill of sale right? is there a 'missing VIN' option in pennsylvania? i know one can fill out some paperwork in the state of WA when such a thing happens with a boat/utility trailer. a more 'negative' option is semding virginia/pennsylvania to the seller as he sold a 'vehicle' that could not be verified. there may be some legal 'mumbo jumpo' about him being legally bound to sell a 'vehicle' that can be verified by a VIN. this may get his attention so you can get him to assist in getting the states to recognize that the trailer exists and isn't stolen. anyhow, just some thoughts. david scobie M15 #288, not yet named philbarilla <philbarilla@peoplepc.com> wrote: I recently purchased a 1977 M-17 and Shoreline trailer in September from a fellow in Virginia. Here is the simple solutions that has worked for me a couple of times in Maryland.? Go to an engraver (trophy supplier or "Things Remembered" store) and buy a small plate and have them engrave the VIN on the plate that appears on the title.? Then?rivet the plate to the tounge of the trailer.? The inspection shop should have no problem with verifying the VIN on the trailer to the VIN on the title.? Once you have the inspection certificate then go to the DMV with a check and you should be in good shape.?? My boat came from KY which doesn't even register trailers.? Hence I didn't even have a valid title and I could not find the VIN on the trailer.? I had a plate made and attached it to the trailer.??I had it inspected and then went to one of those third party DMV stores and registered the trailer.? It cost me an extra $25 dollars for the stores fee, but they are not as much of a?pain in the A**, with policy and procedures and I was able to walk out with my plates within 20 minutes.? It was well work the extra money.? Good Luck!!? There was no VIN # on my 1978 trailer. Missouri registered it as "Home Made" and gave it a new birth date and VIN plate, which I screwed to the hitch frame. Howard On Dec 26, 2007, at 12:57 PM, philbarilla wrote:
