Re: M_Boats: I am a new member
Bruce, One more consideration that was important for me (but not everyone) is that I wanted the option of storing my boat in my garage. I have a 2 car garage (with cars) and a 3rd single door setup which used to have a tent camper parked there before I sold it. My (roll-up) garage door height is just about 7', and the depth is barely 19' and a few inches. I can barely coax the M15 in, IF I fully remove the extendable/collapsing tongue AND IF I remove the mast before backing the boat into the garage. I will soon need the driveway space for another car and teen driver (uh oh). For this reason alone, I had to rule out the P19 which otherwise had much appeal to me as a trailerable "camper-sailor", especially one that is fully beachable. Also, from my measurements I would not have even been able to fit an M17 in the garage. This led me to compare the P15 and M15, and, although the P15 is also beachable, I decided I would value more the (approx) 315 lb of ballast and secondary stability offered by the shoal draft keel+centerboard option offered with M15. That said, the P15 derives a great deal of stability from its hard-chine hull design. I find that the M15 lapstrake hull design does provide for a drier ride USUALLY, but out on Folsom Lake a few weeks ago when the winds were howling (don't ask), the spray was indeed deflected off the bow, only to be blown back in the cockpit and in my face, so your mileage will vary. This week will actually be the first real test for me since I acquired my M15 last August to do "beach" camping at Woodward. My boat will be floating out a ways in the water with a longer bow line while the Potters will pulled right up to the shoreline. But I don't mind wading... ps come out to Cruiser Challenge in Monterey this July. Neil: You might kick up rudder, motor, and centerboard and beach your M15 stern first. If you have a boarding ladder on the stern that's even better. --Gary Hyde 2005 M17 #637 sailboat 'Hydeaway 2' On May 19, 2010, at 5:00 PM, ndorf@surfbest.net wrote:
