Joe, My experience just a few weeks ago, my first time out with my M15, on a 4000' mountain lake with variable winds and some real gusts, that when the boat was at a broad reach or run, the boom was not only extended out over the water but definitely twisting up such that it was not at all parallel to the water (as it would be for example close hauled). I'm by no means an expert but this condition seemed evidence enough for me that a boom vang should be standard equipment on my boat. And in very light winds, I wouldn't want any of that wind to spill out unused and go to waste instead of propelling the boat... Again, I'm new at this rigging stuff. I sailed a Super Satellite many moons ago but I don't remember much about the rigging, only the many times I swamped or nearly swamped my cockpit when the boat was heeling and scaring the sh_t out of every crew member that went along with me (visions of a trip to Havasu / Crazy Horse cmpg come to mind) ;-) Thank goodness I have a good friend with a Vagabond 17 who is showing me the ropes all over again. Thanks to all who have replied to my question. This is a great forum. Fair Winds Neil
