Sink drain thru-hull
I have noticed lots of discussion about checking/replacing the cockpit drain thru-hull because of possible corrosion. What about the sink drain thru-hull, on older M17s so equipped? I'm guessing this has not been a problem because it is slightly above the waterline and is therefore not constantly wet. The "little tikes" sink is pretty useless so, if you are planning to refinish the hull anyway, now would be a good time to grind out that thru-hull and patch the hole. Otherwise, I would just keep an eye on it.

Concerning the cockpit thru hull drain, I have considered installing a shower drain which is designed to take up very little depth such that it could be plumbed into the cockpit where the existing drain is now and due to its design be led out the transom above the waterline. That would enable one to close up the only hole below the waterline. The first part of that project though would involve cutting in an access panel in the aft wall of the cockpit. Look up "AS-IS" in the MSOG photosite to see what I did with my 1977 Monty 17. It is extremely handy to be able to access that part of the hull!!! It is well worth doing in any event. I did put an round access hatch in the aft wall of the cockpit, and added a pair of drains an inch or so up from the sole. They exit the transom a few inches above the waterline. Even though the hoses are crossed I still get water coming in if I sail with three people aboard. I keep a couple of rubber corks with lanyards attached to screw eyes handy for when that happens. Hasn't been a problem with just my grandson and I. We do tend to sit at the forward end of the cockpit. Sent from my iPad

SeaDog or Bluesea make a simple flapper valve for about $5 each that screws on over the end of the drain hose as it exits the transom. These greatly improve the situation. I have them on my boat.
