Hi guys...When I bought my 15 a few months ago it came with a spinnaker but I haven't a clue how to deploy it. What is the procedure?...Also how do I reef the main...I have one set of reef-points...I'm slowly learning the fine points of sailing this beauty....it really is a fine little sailer...Thanks Greg Adams M-15 #151 Dancing Bear
Here is a good writeup: http://www.tritonclass.org/articles/spi/#smallboat It might appear dated but it is clearly written and has proven useful in teaching. As to reefing the techniques vary according to how your boat is rigged but here are a couple of sequences. Reefing Prep - in all cases, heave to on Starboard Tack - most reefing set ups have all the controls on the starboard side so that you have the right of way while not paying as much attention to the course as normal. Make sure the boat is just footing along with the tiller tied to port. Thisalso assumes that the reefing clew outhaul has been lead back towards the mast so that you can reach it without falling out of the boat to leeward. With Topping lift - tack comes first - ensure the topping lift is snug enough to not let the boom droop too far - lower the main until the reefing tack is in position - if using a hook at the goosneck, hook the reefing tack into the hook while holding the halyard, when hooked tighten the halyard and cleat it - if no hook, cleat off the halyard without raising it - fix the reefing tack into position using whatever lines are rigged or available, when secure, loosen the halyard and tighten up the luff and re cleate it. -If you have not pre-rigged a tack out haul - go back to the dock and start over (see below). - If you have pre-rigged the outhaul, pull the reefing outhaul down and out on the boom to get a nice tight foot on the sail and cleat it off. - tie the reefing lines loosly around the foot of the sail (if the main is loose footed do not tie them around the boom). - release the heave to settings and your off and sailing again. With No Topping lift. - Drop the main a couple of feet only, - haul in on the reefing clew line which will raise the boom. - Drop the main some more - may be able to get the reefing tack point near the goose neck with haveing the boom in the water on the second or third lowering of the main. - When the reefing tack is in the new position, secure it. and raise the main and tighten the luff, cleat the main. - finish tightening the reefing clew/outhaul line to tighten the foot. - tie off the reefing lines as above - release the heave too setting and sail away. Back at the Dock ( or out in the big waves bouncing around with chaos all around) - Drop all of the sails keeping the boom in the cockpit - Leave the main in the track for the last 10 inchs or so just to reduce the chaos. - jury rig all of the steps for pre-rigging with the goal to get a tight foot after the reefing tack has been secured. - raise the sails when in an appropriate position I hope this helps.
