That kite idea is actually 'old hat' The French Canadian guy (I think his name is Guy) that invented 'cape horn wind vanes' and then made a video of his solo (only one stop) circumnavigation did it way back .The video won awards,is still available from him and has to have some of the BEST offshore footage ever taken. With in the video is one clip with the kite idea.Only difference is it was back in the 70's and he was naked at the time.

I have wrapped up my 17 for winter slumber, I had one last sail for the year. The weather was awesome and I got a chance to work off some calories from thanksgiving. It is a little early but rough northerns like to sneak up on us in south Texas, the last one blew in at about 40+ knots. This will tear into any boat in a slip and being as light as they are our boats can really do the mast dance. Anyway my original 1974 sails are tired and its time to start thinking " New Sails" for the next season. I remember a couple of threads on this and recommendations. But presently I am awaiting acces to the archives ( I forgot my password) so before I bring up a subject already discussed, I have a different tack. I remembered that sailrite sells a sail kit for the Montys. They have mains, jibs, and genoas. I remember talking to Wayne, I believe, and he had ordered the jib kit and was pleased. Has anyone ordered the main kit? There seems to be a standard kit using 4.5 oz Dacron the kit sells for $360.00 probably around 400 after all is said and shipped. How much have you all been paying? gilbert
The kick up rudder on my 1974 m-17 has kicked the bucket. It was a homemade job from the PO and was workable, but now the fiberglass sleeve has cracked in several places and is pretty bad. It has served me well though and although reglassing is an option I am going to look at something a little different. My boat uses the original pintle an gudgeon configuration, and that in itself is dangerous running aground since the gudgeons are bolted to the boat transom and have no give to cushion the blow. Rebedding this holes are on my winter project list. I would like to hear from you guys that bought the new lighter material rudders from ida sailor or other manufacturers. I wonder who Bob is buying them from these days? Any way, any help would be appreciated. Gilbert Saggita M-17 1974
A kick up rudder will save you grief as I found out a couple years ago. I tore some bolts loose, when I hit something underwater very hard a couple years ago, & took on a little water. Luckily I was near the ramp when it happened. Got a kick up rudder now & it works great. Why don't you call Bill Tosh, 903-743-5555, TCBOATS. He makes sails and rudders, & is located in Rusk Tx. Will do a great job and reasonable prices. Thanks Wayne that's a good start. I think he does both sails and rudders. gilbert -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+gilbert=mindgame.com@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+gilbert=mindgame.com@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Wayne Yeargain Sent: Monday, November 28, 2005 7:48 AM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: New Kick up rudder Why don't you call Bill Tosh, 903-743-5555, TCBOATS.
