The best book I have found is Working Rope Field Guides for Rigging Book 5 Basic Braided Splices by Brion Toss & Margie McDonald. Also take a look at Brion Toss's video or DVD on splicing. Does the video deal with braided line or three strand? I can do three strand without any problem. It's the double braided splices that gives me a hangover without the fun!! Hi Joe, In the early days of braided line, I got the Samson Book on how to do the splices, as well as the proper sized fids for the various sizes of line I was using. It's been a long time ago, but after making the first one - a learning process - the rest became very easy, and I don't recall every having problems with the process. Just do the steps in order, .... and you wind up with a lovely splice in a braided line. Connie Joe Murphy wrote:

Well here it is... the 4th and I'm more excited now than I used to get at Christmas as a kid. Maybe because at 62 I'm still a kid. So what's all the excitement and fuss?? Well, in a very short while I will be splashing the latest M-17 out of Bob's boat shop. She will be called Sea Frog. My prior boat was a NS 27 named Sea Gray. Due to the area I live in with its shallow waters and 2-3 foot tides, I needed a gunkholer; a shallow drafter; a boat that I can decide when to take out and not the other way around. So Sea Frog seemed to fit.... hopping around from one outer bank island to another. After she is finished I will put together a collage showing her construction from day one. As I'm sure some of you have never seen this process take place. I live on Bogue Banks near Beaufort NC. So if there are any Montys in this neck of the woods, let me know and hopefully we can have a raft up someday. Have a great 4th!! Joe ps Working with Bob has been easier than falling off a barstool. jm
Congratulations Joe. Enjoy your new boat. It's good to hear about your great experience with Bob and his crew--those guys in SoCal are naturally laid back and their butts fit a barstool perfectly. Cheers. tom
