Hi guys, i have a couple of quick questions. First, does anyone happen to know the manufacturer and/or source for the motor mount on my 2005 M17 pictured here? http://www.skyko.com/mmount.jpg Second, I have some items to mount to my M17 and I can't remember what type of epoxy we discussed using to fill the hole for redrilling (so to protect the inner layers from water damage). I have some two part 30 minute epoxy, but do I need to use a special salt water proof marine grade product? (if so, which do you recommend?) Thanks Rick M17 #635 Eidolon

Rick: This was a blog post where I described how I did mine. http://audasea.montgomeryowners.com/?p=7 The blog post prior to that talked about epoxy. As long as its a good two part epoxy, preferably one that uses a 2:1 ratio, it should be fine. That would be products like Raka, System 3, MAS, etc. West Systems uses pumps, but will also work. I'd use a slow hardener to give you the maximum working time and even with that, mix up small batches. Would be a good idea to thicken it a bit with fumed silica (cabosil). i'm using west system epoxy on SWEET PEA. 105 and the 205 hardener (cold here in WA so i needed the lower cure temp). see detail on SWEET PEA's blog (link below). there is no way in a few years of projects i'll use all the epoxy 'mix' and supplies i have at the moment. if you are interested we can share some of the west system as you are just a short drive north. i have all you need to do the job. dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site - http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Tue, 4/6/10, Richard Everett <rick@skyko.com> wrote: Hi guys, i have a couple of quick questions. West System sells their 105 and 205 in sample size packets. Great for small jobs. They are about the size of ketchup packets. Rick, I don't know your mfr, but I have a mount somewhat like that from my M-17 that is for sale. It is probably a few years older than 2005. I have been looking on the net all over for Montgomery 17's .I notice that some models have a cut out in the transom for an outboard in the transom. Other models have a motor mount on the transom. The cut out for the motor looks to make the most sense to me. I assume that the difference is the year model. If so, what year models have the outboard cut out in the transom? Thanks, Tim Erwin _______________________________________________
tim: the 'classic', ie older, M17s have the cut-out transoms. these models all come from the VERY early 80s and earlier. these M17s also have the following in common - * cast iron centerboard * steel punchings for ballast in skeg keel * metal framed windows * the 'old' cockpit/deck mold ('streamlined forward cabin hatch that opens forward, cabin-top is shorter meaning less sitting headroom, cockpit seats are lower in relation to the cockpit floor, and the cockpit lockers have a different layout). * the transom to deck joint is prone to damage dave scobie M17 #375 - SWEET PEA visit SWEET PEA's www-site - http://www.m17-375.webs.com --- On Wed, 4/7/10, Timothy Erwin <sailtim@yahoo.com> wrote: I have been looking on the net all over for Montgomery 17's .I notice that some models have a cut out in the transom for an outboard in the transom. Full transom with adjustable motor mount allows the motor to be lifted up higher if necessary, so a bit more flexibility. That being said, there are many, many older models still sailing (and motoring). They are all great boats. Get one :) Bill Wickett M17 On Wed, Apr 7, 2010 at 8:51 AM, Timothy Erwin <sailtim@yahoo.com> wrote:

For what it's worth I like the motor mount off the transom. It is spring loaded so it's very easy to lift the motor up to let the prop clear the water. I suppose there is some difference in weight distribution with the motor hanging that additional distance off the transom.
