Montypals: I have never launched my boat in Clearlake. Any suggestions for sailing there? Daniel
I'm considering a 4 cylinder SUV that claims 1500 lb tow capacity with brakes and 1000 without. Has any put brakes on a mid-80s M15 Trailrite trailer? . Any recommendations, pros/cons? Thanks , Don Haas
Up here on the salty North Atlantic boaters avoid boat trailer brakes unless the boat/Trailer/outboard combination weight approaches the legal requirement of 3000 pounds. This is to avoid brake corrosion problems common around here. Right now I am investigating upgrading from my 4 cyl RAV4 because my new boat/motor/Trailer rig weighs 1914 lbs as per a highway weigh station. BTW. No brakes on the new rig. Hello Rav4 owner. Don, I am here on the west coast and I am considering getting a Rav4 for pulling my M-15. Can you tell me what type or brand of trailer hitch / receiver you put on your Rav4 ? I currently have the small receiver type on my Camry Wagon. The Camry is pretty gutless so I am a "gentle drive" with the rig. ---Thanks and good luck with the brake discussion.....Larry M-15 Old Monty 189 by Jerry M. ps.....if you have photos please send by email to this email address. -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces@mailman.xmission.com] On Behalf Of Don White Sent: Sunday, July 29, 2012 4:29 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Trailer Brakes Up here on the salty North Atlantic boaters avoid boat trailer brakes unless the boat/Trailer/outboard combination weight approaches the legal requirement of 3000 pounds. Hi Larry I went to the local shop recommended by the toyota salesman as a lower cost alternative to the expensive Toyota option. The shop only carried the Hidden Hitch 5000lb version with the 2 inch receiver. This was overkill considering the 1500 lb rated capacity of my 4 cyl RAV4 but it was reasonable at a bit over $250.00 plus the wiring harness and little electronic box. Here is a hitch for a RAV4 at $150. There are lots of sources on the internet for Aftermarket Hitches. I am told that the Toyota and Lexus hitches that fit my Lexus SUV fit above the exhaust, so there is better clearance than the aftermarket hitches that are cheaper. http://www.hitchsource.com/toyota-rav-trailer-hitch-06-12-class-iii-p-27584....

Yeah, I know about that. But the lake is supposed to be fun for sailing. There is an active sailing club there. My sail guy John Amen emailed me with some advice. Daniel On Jul 30, 2012, at 7:09 AM, Neil Dorf wrote:
