I'm starting from scratch installing a reefing system . I would appreciate any information y'all may have on different reefing systems you may have installed. Thanks, Tim Sent from my iPad
OK, no problem. You'll love it. OK, my setup: I have good strong reinforcements in my sail, and my sail is not loose footed. I only have one reef point at the moment, but I am about to add another. At the tack end I have replaced the top of my gooseneck with this hook from Dwyer mast: DH680 found here: https://www.dwyermast.com/items.asp?cat1ID=40&cat1Name=Hardware&familyID=17&... Very easy to do. Just take out the cotter pin, and replace the upper part of the gooseneck with the hook. At the clew end starboard I mounted a cheek block, Harken H233 as seen here http://www.apsltd.com/c-442-harkensmallboatblocks.aspx Now, where to put that is just a bit tricky. You want to lower your main until the new clew is close to the boom. You want the angle of the line to be about 45 degrees, and not 90 degrees. So, the block needs to be a few inches aft of the new clew. Then mount some kind of cleat forward a bit. I use a simple linear jam cleat. On the port side of the boom mount a pad eye or dead eye just across from the cheek block on the other side. Now, run some small yacht braid, such as New England Sta-Set from the pad eye, up through the grommet, down to the cheek block, and to your jam cleat. Then, with some more small line, if you have grommets to capture the loose bit of main left, tie some lengths of that into them. Now, when it is time to reef, heave to, take up the boom a bit with the topping lift, release the main halyard to hook the new tack on the hook, pull in the reef line to make the new clew, tie up the loose main, trim the main halyard tight, slacken the topping lift, and you are off!
