I want to install CDI roller furling on my M-15. My question is. Since I have to change the forestay to a turnbuckle arrangement plus buy a new sail, would it be advisable to go to a Masthead configuration since I live in an area of light winds most of the year? This is the second time I have posted this with no responses. Does anyone have Dave Scobies email? Also: I have a 2012 Honda 2hp longshaft OB for sale. Charles Hill 865-438-0600 chsail36@aol.com
Charles, I remember this being brought up once before several years ago. Jerry pretty much shot it down as a bad idea. As I recall, the issues with converting to a masthead rig went far beyond replacing the forestay and included things like installing a backstay, shortening the boom to clear it, re-cutting the main, and maybe even relocating the mast to balance the new sail plan. You might be able to find his post in the archives. Good luck. Larry Y On Tue, Oct 7, 2014 at 7:54 AM, Charles Hill via montgomery_boats < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

Absolutely not change the sailplan. The boat structure is not designed fie a masthead rig. There are also center of effort issues to consider. Whom is telling you to replace the forestay? I need to check but, I believe, potter 15 with furrlers don't have turnbuckles. :: Dave Scobie :: M17 #375 SWEET PEA :: Former M15 owner On Oct 7, 2014 8:55 AM, "Charles Hill via montgomery_boats" < montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> wrote:

I agree with Dave, converting to a masthead rig would be much more complicated than just extending the forestay. You probably would have to add a backstay, and swap out the existing side stays for lowers and capshrouds with spreaders, and reinforce all the attachment points. You probably also would have to add a compression post under the mast and reinforce the hull at the base. Even then, the mast section might still be too small. As Dave said, it would also affect the boat's balance. This is naval architect stuff and way more trouble than it would be worth. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dave Scobie" <scoobscobie@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com>, "Charles Hill" <chsail36@aol.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 7, 2014 11:40:46 AM Subject: Re: M_Boats: forestay Absolutely not change the sailplan.
