1/12/22 Recommendation re: ballast quantity to purchase
Gentlemen, 1. I have started the repair process of my cracked shoal keel by removing the steel punchings. 2. Dave Scoobie visited the other night and suggested I ask Jerry for the weight of ballast to purchase. a. Hull # MMP 173320981. 3. So far I have pulled out most of the steel punchings. a. Just shy of 300 lbs. b. There is a lot steel punchings that just went everywhere, not sure if was 10% of what I have removed everywhere though. c. The remainder in the keel will probably take a week or more to chase out. The solidified oxidized stuff just doesn't want to leave the boat. 4. I have the day off Friday and a local source of reclaimed range lead shot #7 to #9 that will provide me the weight I need (500 lbs is possible). a. If possible would like to purchase all the lead I need. b. No worries, if I don't hear from anyone prior to Friday, between excavating the stubborn steel ballast pockets and figuring out how to cast resin lead bricks, I'll have opportunities to purchase additional lead in the future. Thank you, Tim de Lacy -- This email has been checked for viruses by Avast antivirus software. https://www.avast.com/antivirus
Tim, I would love pictures of what you had to do to retrieve all those steel punchings out of the hull. Sounds like quite a job. Depending on where you are located, I may have lead for you. Laying beneath my Monty is the ballast from my old Sea Sprite 23, about 1400 pounds worth of lead that has stubbornly refused to be easily cut up into smaller chunks. Art. Ballast is 600 pounds total. Counting the centerboard. Use lead shot in 25 pound bags. Fix the hull. Pour in the shot from above. Bob Sent from my iPad

Thank you Bob. I am planning on pursuing an approach Dave Scoobie recommended. I am going to create resin lead bricks from the lead shot and epoxy them to the shoal keel and then layup the outer skin of my shoal keel to the lead bricks. I like this idea as the entire shoal keel should have a degree of structural integrity. Guess I am planning on hitting the bottom a couple of time here in the Salish Sea and inland lakes. 😊 Tim -----Original Message----- From: Bob Eeg <montgomeryboats@hotmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 12, 2022 10:34 PM To: For and about Montgomery Sailboats <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Subject: M_Boats: Re: 1/12/22 Recommendation re: ballast quantity to purchase Ballast is 600 pounds total. Hi Dave,
My apologies to everyone for not responding. If you need access, send another email. Lost track in the business of life.
I’ll do better…

Gerry!
Good to hear from you!! I've sent email messages but not heard back so sending you this note via the listproc.
I've had a couple of folks contact me trying to get accounts on the MSOGphotosite stating they never received a response after sending an email.

Hi Tim,
Why don’t you use the MSOG photo site. I run the site, but haven’t seen a lot of activity recently. Part of the problem is my failure to check the site email! I’ll be better about that!

Tim

Ballast is 600 pounds total. Counting the centerboard. Use lead shot in 25 pound bags. Fix the hull. Pour in the shot from above. Bob

Tim,
I would love pictures of what you had to do to retrieve all those steel punchings out of the hull. Sounds like quite a job. Depending on where you are located, I may have lead for you. Laying beneath my Monty is the ballast from my old Sea Sprite 23, about 1400 pounds worth of lead that has stubbornly refused to be easily cut up into smaller chunks.

Gentlemen,
Thank you,
Tim de Lacy

Hi Gerry, I will submit photos of my shoal keel repair when complete and share what I have learned with the community. Presently I am in the midst of deconstruction soon to transition to reconstruction. As the story is not complete, not sure how many chapters will be thrown out. The photos will tell only what worked for me not what did not. I have sincerely appreciated the site and have gleaned quite a bit of information. Thank you for your efforts in maintaining the site. Art, I plan to retire in a month and half. One of my projects will be to create a web site. Sharing what works and what doesn't work for me. In the meantime, shoot me an email address that I can pass along higher resolution pictures.
