"Hello the Montgomery"
Back in 2000, right after I bought my 1976 M17 and hadn't even done enough work on her yet to get her in the water, I was hanging around the waterfront on Pend Oreille Lake in northern Idaho. I hadn't even seen another Montgomery yet, but wonder of wonders, a M15 came sailing by. I called out "Hello the Montgomery!" My wife was mortified. How uncouth! She still teases me about it. Fortunately, the sailor was less sensitive about strangers yelling across the lake at him, and he sailed over for a nice chat. Last weekend, as I was sailing back to our marina on Pend Oreille Lake, a voice called out behind me "Hello the Montgomery!" I had to grin as I hove to, and a power boat pulled up to visit. Turned out to be a guy who had just moved up from California and used to own a M17 flat deck named Chunky Dory, but had sold her a while back down in L.A. That boat name rang a bell, so I wrote to Mark Esovedo, who I've been corresponding with in regard to one of his modifications on his flush deck Amy, and sure enough! It's the same boat. Small world, huh? Good story Larry. A small world indeed. Just about every time I set up or take down, someone ends up stopping by and asking about the boat. Wrinkle boats seem to attract attention. Out the bunch folks over the last three years that have stopped , only about three new PUFF was a Montgomery...one knew Lyle designed it and knew a lot about the 17 specifically. He owns the only Flicka on the Lake. I have twice had notes taped to my boat saying if ever I want to sell, please call. As for a small world related story. I cruise the Wooden Boat forums quite a bit and noticed a posting: "Atkin "INGA" for sale in Victoria Craigs List". Clicked on the link and lo and behold was a boat I had done extensive rebuild and restoration on back in the early 80's. The boat was owned by a shipwright I worked for occasionally at the time. He would keep me busy working on his own boat when the paying work slowed down or there wasn't any joiner work to be done around the boat yard. I worked on Mischief on and off for about three years. Originally made (by him) in '55, strip planked out of scraps from the Yarrows Shipyard where they were working on mine sweepers. She is a heavy old school work boat style double ender. To me, always a beautiful boat. I did a lot of good work in and on that boat. The part that stands out in my memory was the deck. I replaced the old ply deck with a solid fir caulked deck....but the new deck was made of very old perfectly QS old growth fir that was reclaimed from giant wine vats. That wood was as hard as Eastern Maple, was wine coloured and smelled wonderful. It also (when freshly planed) had a glitter to it when held up to sunlight just the right way. I hand planed that whole deck flush after laying it. I have one elbow that still gives me trouble from that project. Anyway, out of the blue it was like a chance meeting with an old friend after 20 plus years of wondering where they were. I never even had a photo of that boat. So many of the projects over the years slipped by without an image to hang on to. When I contacted the owner...turns out I had done some work on his previous boat and we remembered each other. He sent me some images. What fun!
