Havasu Az sail this winter
Dorothy, Eldor, and anyone else, We'd love to have you come see us and sail in January or any winter month for that matter. We keep Dauntless in the water here in Havasu from October thru May. Even though it's the desert, it can still be kinda cool, but we don't mind. The lake is all ours as the fair weather crowd is long gone and the winter winds often grace us with their presence. Can't guarantee anything but we usually don't go too long between good sailing days. Of course, we've all been spoiled by the Washington guys, so now we'll never be satisfied again! That invite goes for any other Monty crews as well. Maybe if we start planning something we can get some other folks to come. Last year we got a few Montys together in Phoenix for the Arizona Yacht Club's Birthday Regatta on Lake Pleasant. Uh...well...I have to tell you that it was the coldest I have ever been on the boat. Overnight lows were in the 20's! and we were racing in 45 degrees in the morning...BUT that's better than the frozen water in other areas...and it was a record setting cold snap, not the norm. Heck, there was even one guy that borrowed a blanket and spent the night in the cab of his Toyota.........(Gary O are you out there??!! :-) On the second night his crew , our own Jerry Montgomery himself, knocked some sense into him and they drove down into town and slept in warm beds!) Worse case scenario here in Havasu is that you sail to a hotel, slip the boat in their docks and get a waterfront room! Now that's pampered sailing! Now if you really want some good sailing, albeit a bit cold, Lake Mead would be the place for us to go. That is as long as the water is high enough to use the ramps. Even at 50% capacity, Lake mead is absolutely HUGE. It is known for big wind and big waves (for a lake anyway). There is a group of Macgregors that go there every year for the annual Mead Madness trip. It can get pretty cold up there at night ,though and it's pretty remote. If there are folks out there who are serious about a winter trip down here to sail, let me know and we'll try to put something together. Maybe we could set up a sailing Poker Run or something with a marina/and or hotel stay at each end of the lake (about 20 mile sail).
