Re: M_Boats: Anchor deck hardware..
Jazz, Best for the boat and your shins would be to remove it and replace with correct cleat (fasteners are undersized at current install) potential for SERIOUS deck damage if heavily loaded. It should look like a 6 inch cleat, and as mentioned, with the proper bolts and backing plate below deck. The original bow cleat was a 4-5" black anodized aluminum horn cleat, same as what might still be on your boat's stern quarters. I replaced mine with the 6" version of the following (I'm partial to Suncor because they are local to me): http://www.suncorstainless.com/herreshoff-cleat Note that they also sell ready made backing plates. You might be able to justify an 8" bow cleat on an M17. Anything larger than that would be way too big. -----Original Message----- From: Jazzy Sent: Sunday, February 28, 2016 8:48 PM To: GILASAILR@aol.com ; For and about Montgomery Sailboats Subject: Re: M_Boats: Anchor deck hardware.. Ok got it. Is it oriented bow to stern, or side to side? I still have the original cleats aft, they seem to be aluminum and are silver. I'm wondering about plugging the holes from the current setup. Is that a 3m job or will I be fiberglassing painting etc...? On Feb 28, 2016 6:47 PM, "Stanley Wheatley" <swwheatley@comcast.net> wrote:

Jazz, Pull off the existing samson post and check the bolt holes against those of a 6 inch hershoff deck cleat aimed fore and aft. If the holes are widely separated use the standard drill out and fill with epoxy trick. If the cleat holes are close to the existing holes you may be able to reuse the holes and not have to drill new ones. I have some 1/8 inch ss plate so would make two identical plates one for inside, one for outside and drill holes to match the existing. I would then bolt the cleat to the top plate. No new holes, nice big pads top and bottom to spread the load on a balsa cored deck. Have fun. A word of advice, don't wait until the list is done to go sailing. It never will be done, you will never go sailing😩. I looked at your image again and it also reminded me of some sort of tabernacle for a very large mast. The wooden mast wound have to have a cross tang to catch the uprights on your deck post though or it would just swing through and land on your car roof. Also the position would be for a cat rig. An interesting contraption. Maybe there is a maker stamp on the bottom of it that would point to its original intended use. Perhaps it has nothing to do with sailing and some shade tree tinkerer thought it would repurpose just right where it is. "Curiouser and curiouser", said Alice. Tom did you ever get dropbox going? I'd love to see pictures of your boat details. We should have a boat tour from everyone! I've never even seen another Monty. Not only that, this is the first "real" sailboat I've ever had a chance to look at so closely so I'm sort of like the blind man inspecting an elephant. Thomas Your link opened up my Dropbox with all its files. To the left there was a share link that indicates the ability to make any file available to others to view or add pics. I opened my Montgomery folder and it has a share button at the right top. Sharing a whole folder requires an email from the person you want to share it with...and they have to have dropbox as well. So prob just a link to the pic is the only way to go in here. If you find diff let me know, would be cool to see whole folders! Jazz On Mar 1, 2016 9:47 AM, "George Iemmolo" <griemmolo2@gmail.com> wrote:

Your link opened up my Dropbox with all its files. To the left there was a share link that indicates the ability to make any file available to others to view or add pics. I opened my Montgomery folder and it has a share button at the right top. Still have not figured out how to make it available to the group

Have fun. Tom B

Your link opened up my Dropbox with all its files. To the left there was a share link that indicates the ability to make any file available to others to view or add pics. I opened my Montgomery folder and it has a share button at the right top. Still have not figured out how to make it available to the group

It has been raining everyday and very still here so I'm just waiting for a good day to go when all the stars align. I know El Nino is totally ready to go, just details now.

Tom, have you looked at photobucket.com ? I've had an account there for years and I think its methods of uploading and sharing photos are pretty simple and intuitive. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Thomas Buzzi" <thomaspbuzzi@gmail.com> To: "For and about Montgomery Sailboats" <montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com> Sent: Tuesday, March 1, 2016 3:01:43 PM Subject: Re: M_Boats: Anchor deck hardware.. Thanks for the feedback, George. There were far too many choices on all the screens to blunder into the right way to do anything. Have fun. Tom B

Thanks for the suggestion, SW. I will look it up but, must say, it took me two hours to get my computer back together and accepting my dslr pics into a folder after I scrubbed Drop Box. Another option to fill a few holes without having to resin, sand, paint or gelcoat, etc. is to just use a truss head screw and nut with the butyl tape under the screw head to seal them up. The details are on that web site I sent a while back about the butyl tape as deck hardware bedding. But basically, you just get a truss head screw to fit the hole size, a locknut and washer for the inside, bed the screw head with butyl per the info for any other deck hardware, trim or cap the inside end of the screw. Truss head screws are flatter and wider than pan head - you may have to go to, or order from, a fastener supplier (e.g. Fastenal) to get them, most hardware stores only have pan head. This won't work though if the replacement cleat base needs to sit where the old holes are. In that case you have to fill those flush. cheers, John S. On 02/28/2016 07:25 PM, Jazzy wrote:
