Hi All, I got the following E-mail request from the Photo Site. Most I can answer, but this one I need help with: Bill, I am almost ready to order a new M-15 without even seeing one, this is not like me. I would love to contact an owner in Maryland to see the boat, and maybe sail it. I have a West Wight Potter 15, and it's a good boat, but I think the Montgomery will better suit my needs. I would really appreciate it if you can put me in touch with a nearby M-15 owner. Thanks, Bill Derr <_william.e.derr@us.army.mil_ (mailto:william.e.derr@us.army.mil) > Someone close to him please give him an E-mail direct
OK, I'll admit it. I bent my mast. Not a gentle bend, or a slight curve, but a good, solid sharp angled bend, with a sever crease in it. A gust of wind took it from me as I was taking the mast down, and instead of going aft it went forward, and the pulpit acted as a fine stop. And creaser. Now I'm going to order a mast extrusion from Dwyer, and I've started to unbolt the existing hardware, but have a minor problem. I assume that I should use stainless fasteners to reattach the pieces, but the spreader bases are held to the mast with machine screws that are 3 1/4 " long, and the longest ones that I can come up with are only 3". Should I consider using galvanized, or is there a source that I can find longer ones? Thomas Howe Mailto:Thomas@TEHowe.com O --------(\ ---------- ~ (\ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ (\ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
Hi, Thomas These folks would appear to have what you want: http://www.biscofl.com/ssfasteners.htm I've never done business with them. If your bolt is 3 1/4" long, it was likely cut down from a longer bolt, as I believe bolts above 3" long are available in 1/2" increments. Another possibility would be a fastener supply house. I'm sure you have them in your neck of the woods; one near me is Sabo Fastener and Supply, 419-884-1200, Dean Sabo (pronounced Say-Bo). While supplying one solitary odd bolt is not exactly his market niche, he might be willing to help you out. (the company I work for has bought bolts from him before; he's a good guy) Another possibility would be to use stainless threaded rod and two nylock nuts. That stuff is available through www.mcmaster.com . I'm not sure how strong threaded rod is compared to a bolt. Have you looked to see if there is a compression sleeve inside the mast (to prevent crushing the extrusion)? With this small of a boat you might not need such a thing so long as you don't over tighten the bolt initially. I was just out in the barn and checked out Busca's bolt: it appears to be 1/4" dia x 4" long, although I wasn't able to lay the tape directly on the bolt of course. I believe I have some 3 3/4" 1/4-20 bolts when the time comes, but the Dwyer masts might need a different size. Do not use gal. bolts as aluminum and zinc will almost explode in salt water. It's too bad the database is no more at www.msog.org; it could help Bill locate someone who may be closer than me. I'm assuming you're in the Aberdeen area, Bill? My '88 M-15 is down in Leonardtown, and you're welcome to come take a look, but if you're in Aberdeen rather than around D.C., someone in Pa. or Delaware may be closer. I think there are a few in NoVa also. -- John Tyner M-15 #412 "Chimpanzee" -----Original Message----- From: montgomery_boats-bounces+tynerjr=gmpexpress.net@mailman.xmission.com [mailto:montgomery_boats-bounces+tynerjr=gmpexpress.net@mailman.xmission .com]On Behalf Of BILLAMICASR@aol.com Sent: Thursday, February 16, 2006 11:57 AM To: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Subject: M_Boats: Maryland Monty Hi All, I got the following E-mail request from the Photo Site.
