Heat gun and scraper is the best method I've found, Bones. I didn't apply varnish to anything that I stripped though. I've been very happy with Cetol (Natural Teak)on all my brightwork. The rudder gets bottom paint below the waterline and Cetol above. If you like the gloss of varnish Cetol has a clear gloss top coat too. I tried that last winter and it turned out very nice. But, if you're a varnish lover, you'll probably stick with the varnish! To each his own. :) Happy maintenance to you. Mark -----Original Message-----

Hi Gang,
Well, time has come to re-varnish the M23 rudder (again) and thought I'd ask the collective group about the best methods to strip the old crased varnish. I seem to recall Don Casey suggests a heat gun and a putty style knife. Has anyone had good luck with chemical liquid stripping compounds? Here come the winter boat projects.
Thank you.
