How Best to Remove Rust
Friends, We have an older Trailrite trailer that is starting to show more rust than paint. Does anyone have any tips, tricks, or product recommendations for stopping and preventing rust on a boat trailer? On a previous trailer with a similar problem we sand blasted, primered, and re-painted. But I was disappointed when rust began to reappear again after only 2 - 3 years. Any help, advise, product recommendations, are appreciated! Thank You, Randy Graves M15 #407 M17 #410
Randy, One preventative I use - turns Iron Oxide (Rust) into Iron Phosphate (which is black) then that portion won't 'rust'. I buy some from Eastwood (Oxysolve?) for my antique vehicles. I like the 'turning black' feature for undersides of my old toys (which are usually black semi gloss, right?). You might also find the Iron phosphate stuff at the local Marina shops, Automotive stores, or even large Hardware stores - under different names. Locally we have OSH and others where I can find it (cheaper than WM). I first encountered it in the dry dock yards (while doing the bottom paint on my previous large fiberglass boat) where the guys with steel boat hulls (Ocean going boats) would grind off the big rust, spray the magic stuff on, wait until it turned black, then primer and paint. [What 'is' that guy doing?? I asked]. It works quite well for most everything that 'rusts' (we have a few boat trailers too). There are also Rustoleum type products that can primer and paint and 'rust proof'. For badly pitted surfaces (neglected boat trailers), I usually paint/cover with the Rustoleum brand hammered metal finishes so the irregular surface isn't obvious. As example - One of our little boat trailers (for a 12 footer) was strong enough, it just sat in an orchard for a few years - looks 'like new' now (a little sand & Paint) and the finish has held up for at least two years so far. Hope that helps.
