Re: M_Boats: M-15 stainless centerboard
Guys: The M-15 doesn't have a centerboard winch or a place to mount one. 1/4" SS plate weighs 10 lbs per sq ft and 1/2" weighs 20 lbs/ sq ft. Think about how you would lift and HOLD the board up. There also isn't a stop pin on and M15 althought you could probably modify the trunck and board to make one like the M17 board. I'm just as happy with the fiberglass board. I'd agree with Don on this one. In the past, we have kicked around ideas for replacing the older cast iron boards on the M17's. Everything from stainless to casting them in bronze. Those options were looking like $1,000 plus per board. Cheapest option was probably a steel board and having it hot dipped galvanized. An even better option was to take care of/salvage the existing cast iron board. Howard On May 24, 2007, at 5:57 AM, LUDLOWD2@aol.com wrote:

Thanks Skipper You are right. I need to do some math to see how much the centerboards weigh. Do you know how much the original CB weighs? Where can I get a new original CB? Can you get a CB a little thinner than the original to compensate for the swollen well. Captain Jim Sadler sailing vessel Pelican On 5/24/07, LUDLOWD2@aol.com <LUDLOWD2@aol.com> wrote:

jim: the post i've added below is from early discussion about your M15 keel issue and relates to a new (thinner) centerboard - ---prior message-- To: jimsadler@jascopacific.com Date: Fri, 23 Feb 2007 13:19:27 -0500 From: wcampion@aol.com Subject: Re: M_Boats: M15 stuck centerboard CC: montgomery_boats@mailman.xmission.com Jim, I've been following your thread concerning your stuck CB. Before I bought my M-15 (cica 1982) I too was concerned about the steel punches and the swelling of the keel trunk. I read Sean's trials & tribulations with Dauntless and almost passed on buying my boat and wait for a lead keel Monty to become available. I spoke with Bob Eeg about the possibility of having this problem in the future and he recommeded a new CB if I were to experience any sticking problems. It appears that the trunk swells due to the rusty steel punches and squeezes the CB. The new CB that Bob sells is slimmer and eliminates the sticking issue. It's also alot cheeper then replacing the balast, not to mention the labor and trouble of the surgery involved. Bob is very aware of the issue with the early model Monty's and this is his recommendation. Personnally, I'd follow Bob's recommendation before I attempted any major surgery.
