I was sailing in a local lake the other day and met a nice folk who told me about the Maine Island Trail and how much fun would it be to do it in the Montgomery. That got me thinking, has any one here done parts of it? What are you experiences? I know you need to join the Maine Island Trail Association to get their official blessing. I have sailed the coast of Maine before but in a much larger vessel. I'd be curious to hear preparation and sailing advices. If I do it, I'd be towing my boat up from NJ, probably to Portland and deploy somewhere there. The other way is to sail downcoast, which might be easier as it's in the direction of alongshore current. Anyway, any thought and comment is appreciated! Cheers, Donglai M15 #612 Shaolin
Donglai, We did not specifically do the Maine Island trail but covered much of the same area and saw a few of thier campsites. http://members.cox.net/dkelch/Maine%2005%20part1.htm is a web page about the trip that includes the charts and routes followed. If you overlay the Maine Island trail you will see that it goes through Fox Island Thoughoghfare and Merchants row and some of the other areas. It is a great trip for the M15 and M17s.
