I'm not a fan of sheet cleating on the boom: called head knockers for a reason and if you loose the end of the sheet the line ends up being out in the water to leeward and unreachable. I also dislike having the main sheet behind me as it means you are discouraged from keeping it in your hand and this is unsafe. Reaching behind your body to uncleat is also awkward. A block hanging loose is also a challenge as can be difficult to uncleat - safety hazard. Much prefer the sheeting arrangement as Jerry designed. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! I agree w Dave; the standard main sheet setup is perfect for sailing and puts the sheet where you need it across a range of seating options from aft by the tiller to up on the coaming. The only downside is that it does block the companionway when at rest. Tying the main sheet off to the side gets boom and sheet out of the way (i have w handy handle on the coaming a former owner added) and the improved main block I’ll add someday may have a quick release that lets you move it from companion way when hanging out on board… On Sat, Jul 17, 2021 at 11:35 AM Dave Scobie <scoobscobie@gmail.com> wrote:

Generally the stock mainsheet arrangement is best. However, if you have a crew that obstructs your access to the sheet, doesn't like to move or gets sheet tangled in her feet, this is a simpler solution that can be converted back to original in two minutes by rerunning the sheet through original block on traveler, requires no structural or permanent changes, works well and eliminates arguments.. It's a Harken 40mm fiddle block-swivel cam cleat, part 2657 I believe. The angle of the cleat is adjustable, and you need to adjust so it is easy to release with a light downward tug. I think I decided the 57 mm was too big and too heavy. Look for the best deal online for Harken blocks.
