Hi: Been reading a lot about motors, etc, horsepower and stuff. When I bought my boat it came with a 4 horsepower. I’m concerned about the strength of the M15’s transom and motor mount handling 75 pounds. I’ve been sailing with it for 6 years but boats get older and things weaken. Can the M15 handle 75 pounds. Thanks Pete WinterSky (Zimowsky) San Juan Islander lost inland - an old salty stuck in the sagebrush outdoors writer and photographer Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/pzimowsky Twitter: @zimosoutdoors The Northwest Outdoors Journey: https://outdoorsnorthwest.home.blog/2019/03/13/the-journey-begins/ "We Can Not Control the Wind But We Can Adjust Our Sails"
Hi Pete, Your 4 HP outboard is vast overkill for an M15. Everyone with an M15 seems to agree that the HONDA 2 HP outboard is the best and the most optimal size. Connie On 6/11/2022 8:51 AM, Peter Zimowsky via montgomery_boats wrote:

A 4hp motor on a M15 is excessive weight, for balancing and triming the boat, EXCESSIVE power. The M15 is absolutely fine with a Honda 2/2.3. Suzuki is offering a long shaft 2.5 but adds complication of a water pump (yearly teardown and service) and shift linkage (a failure point). IMO at this point don't worry about damaging the transom IF you see no evidence of cracking around the fasteners (both by external and internal inspection) AND you don't have the motor on the transom when trailering the boat. Final IMO - get a Honda 2/2.3. :: Dave Scobie :: M6'8" #650 :: Baba 30 #233 DEJA VU :: SV SWALLOW - sv-swallow.com :: former owner M17 #375 SWEET PEA - m17-375.com :: former owner M15 #288 SCRED - m15namedscred.wordpress.com <<-- new site! On a slightly unrelated note - my Sage 17 came w a Honda 2 HP which has always had stalling issues at low idle. I did all the maintenance I could undertake short of removing and cleaning the carb - I was a little uncomfortable with that prospect. At some point I started calling around to see if I could find someone to work on it. Called at least half a dozen places and no one wanted anything to do with it. Finally talked to a guy in a little town nearly 100 miles from me. He said, “First of all, our rate is $170/hr. At that price it’s not worth your money for us to work on your carb. What we would do is just buy a new one and replace it. THAT being said, YOU can get a brand new one for less than a hundred bucks, and if you’re the LEAST bit handy, you can replace it yourself.” Thanked the guy. Got online. Found the OEM carb for about 90 bucks. It was here in a about a week (ordered new gaskets as well - a few bucks each). Took me about an hour to replace and ever since it’s been running like a champ! I have a 3.5 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke on my M15. I upgraded the carburetor and propeller to make it 4 hp ( Ready Steady Boat ) and it only weighs 45 lb. Boat does 5 knots easily and sails fine without feeling like the weight is an issue . I understand greater HP does not increase speed beyond maximum Hull speed but in my opinion the extra power can make a difference in controlling steerage in the often significant channel currents I have up in BC inner coastal waters here. I also added a 2 gal fuel tank with a fuel line connection to the motor so as not to be refueling at sea with the small motor top tank . There's a good you tube video on how to do that . The motor Mount has an additional plywood reinforcement plate on the inside of the transom. I remove the motor when trailering. Roger M15. Thanks Pete WinterSky (Zimowsky)

All good from here- I can feel the boat happy in those conditions with a bit of freight versus light. I prefer zero tidal action near rocks. Have fUn, go sail. On Mon, Jun 13, 2022 at 12:16 PM Roger Langmaid <rogeregon@gmail.com> wrote:
I have a 3.5 hp Tohatsu 4 stroke on my M15. I upgraded the carburetor and propeller to make it 4 hp ( Ready Steady Boat ) and it only weighs 45 lb. Boat does 5 knots easily and sails fine without feeling like the weight is an issue . I understand greater HP does not increase speed beyond maximum Hull speed but in my opinion the extra power can make a difference in controlling steerage in the often significant channel currents I have up in BC inner coastal waters here.
