Re: M_Boats: Re:Yet another method of propulsion, hand powered outboard
Hi Rusty, Stop worrying. The cast iron centerboard rusting and sticking in the CB trunk is an M17 problem. The M15 has a fiberglass board with some lead weight in the bottom to keep it down. If you don't put in the stopper knot to limit the CB travel, the CB will hit the front edge of the CB truck. The CB pivots on a pin. This pin hole in the CB is located at the upper forward edge of the CB. If the CB is allowed to fall without any restraint, then the small area of the CB between pin and leading edge of the CB might break out...................... Not to be recommended. Therefore a stopper knot (I just use a figure eight knot) that then stops the CB from going all the way down and causing damage. Rule No. 1 for a new M15 owner! Now go have fun! Oh, and have you rigged a jib down haul? Makes taking the jib down so much easier: and it stays down! If you haven't, the drill is: About a 3/16" diameter Dacron line that gets fastened to the jib halyard. The line leads down to a small swivel block at the stem fitting, and from there through one or two fair leads back to the cockpit. My M15 has two jam cleats located on the forward face of the cockpit coaming on the port side. When I drop the jib (I single hand most of the time), I release the jib halyard (cleated on the port side of the of the cabin roof), and then haul away on the jib down haul. Jib is on deck and can't go anywhere. Connie
Connie, If I understand correctly, you have a Honda BF2. How would it work on our M-17 as a calm water kicker? I am concerned about a bigger motor interfering with the action of the rudder. When we brought the boat from the slip to the trailer, we used a 50lb thrust Minn Kota that is presently with the boat. We never used more than half of the power and everything was OK. I know this question has been kicked around by this group for a long time. I feel that I can actually use the outboard cutout on the transom if the motor is small enough. What do you think, will the BF2 cut it? Have you heard of the new Honda BF 2.3? Bill Endelig M-17 #279
Hey everyone. Thanks for the tip on CB protection. I put the stopper in today. It was a gusty day of sailing with just a reefed main, I was surprised how well the boat sailed and tacked without a jib. Very impressive boat! I wasn't able to get it to heave to without the jib though, any suggestions? I also had the opportunity to "scull the rudder" coming back into the slip. It worked pretty good as long as it was FLAT calm. A little breeze made it hard to control though. Using a canoe paddle works fine for propulsion but it is VERY hard to maintain any steerage even with the tiller tied off. Nonetheless, I took my outboard off the boat today and I am going to enjoy sailing motorless until I have the time to overhaul it. Perhaps with more experience, I will never reinstall it!!! -Rusty /M-15 PS: Connie, the FIRST thing I did when I rigged the boat was put a downhaul on, but thanks for the tip anyway! I have wire halyards though and they won't let the downhaul come all the way down. They stop about 4 feet from the tack, should I replace them? Thanks again, -R. ===== "In a power boat you may get there faster, but in a sailboat you are already there." __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
